Description Edit: I added more details and contrast to the picture. Thanks for the critique

So, here's the John Bauer-inspired painting I mentioned earlier. Maybe inspired is the wrong word. Hm. Heavily inspired. Anyway.

Tried out yet another kind of paper, some rough thick one. I like rough textures and how much you can play around with thick paper without breaking it, however this paper disappointed me because lifting doesn't work well at all. The last paper I painted on, Langton rough grain whatever, lets one lift a lot of paint; it's possible to make a coloured area almost white. With this paper one could only make dark paint a little lighter. Which is a shame since I messed up the poor girl's face a little painting on a little damp paper and really needed lifting.

Other than that I'm quite satisfied with this piece. When it comes to texture I used plastic for the upper part of the picture, and used some salt on the closest rocks but lost patience and covered it with paint.

At first I was going to name the image after the little white flowers, but after I looked up their English name I changed my mind. "Wood anemone". Whaat. That sounds just really weird. To me.

I wish I lived in a forest like this. Mmmm.

The plastic looks actually quite good for the trees! I hadn't thought of using it for that purpose.

Now I'm curious about that flower XD *looks up the name* Dutch is "forest anemone".

I'm glad you like it

Swedish for that flower is "vitsippa", which is something like "white anemone", but when I hear anemone I just think of sea anemones so the English name sounds pretty strange to me ^^

I think of sea anemones too, even though in Dutch the name is similar to the English one. I think sea anemones are just the most famous ones XD

Yay! Feedback time!

I just wanted to say that I do really enjoy this piece. It's a very interesting image, and there are several things you did very effectively. First of all: a square composition is no walk in the park. Because a square has a very exact center (unlike a traditional rectangle) it is easy to be tempted to create a very simple, often uninteresting composition within that space. You have successfully avoided that by placing your figure (and the focal point) in the center vertically, but below the horizontal middle of the painting. You've added further compositional interest by extending the horizon line about 2/3 of the way up the page, and balanced the painting nicely with contrasting geometric forms (trees) and organic forms ( the mossy rounded areas).

I think the only significant problem with this painting is contrast. While the girl and the blossoms around her are all very light, everything in the rest of the painting seems to fall into a middle value range. If the dark area behind the trees was allowed to get even darker, perhaps even black it would add visual interest and further improve the atmospheric perspective and ambiance you seem to have already rendered very well. After doing that, it would seem natural to also darken around the bases of those rounded forms on the ground, to move the dark value throughout the painting, and add depth to the interesting forms in the painting.

This really is a wonderful little painting! I would love to see it with some of those small changes made. I think it would really come to life.

Thank you so much for the feedback! I greatly appreciate it, it's very helpful.
I see what you mean about the contrast, and I agree with you. I think I'll try and fix it, soon! ^^
