Description STATION FOUR
"Jesus Says Goodbye to His Mother"

Mixed media oilgraph on canvas with blood and hair.
36"x36"

History
The Stations of the Cross are the fourteen traditional panels
depicting the final moments of Christ's life starting with his condemnation
to death at the hands of Pilate to his crucifixion and burial in the tomb. Over
the years pilgrims would go to Jerusalem and walk the route Jesus took on his
way to the cross, stopping at moments along the way to remember, reflect and
pray. The Stations began appearing in the middle ages when pilgrims were forbidden
to enter Jeruselem when it was occupied by the Turks. They made the Stations
as a way to remember in Spirit back in their own countries. Long considered
only a Catholic tradition, they are now finding a popularity across all traditions.
These are my versions. This journey started in February of 2005 and the
last of the Fourteen was completed April 4th.

This is really pains me as reminding me of the part of the Passion movie where Blessed Mary ran to hold the fallen Jesus.

This is stunning! Is it for a publication project? This series would be wonderful for youth group literature about the stations of the cross.

Thank you so much...and oddly enough no Christian publisher will touch it. All of the majors and even the big Catholic publishers all passed. Much of it has to do with the fact that Christian publishers don't publish art books or they don't know how to market it...or it's just simply way too much for them.

I did however self publish it for the time being on blurb (which includes the story of their making as well as the accompanying prose)

So...thank you again. Been a bit of a frustrating journey in this respect...

What? The Catholic publishers let go of these Holy Spirit filled series?

First...thank you for all of your wonderful comments.
And yes, it's true. I got close with Baker publishing, but in the end they passed along with many others. As I wrote, Christian publishers don't seem to publish art books. Now, had I written a book on the Stations, then I'd have a better shot.

The Catholic publisher I was working with eventually passed because they didn't know how to market it. Which I found a bit baffling. But also even though 'they' loved it, they believe that this series was too much for their audience. Too real, too confrontational.

Yep...So now I'm doing the book of Judges to lighten things up...

Thank you again!

Well.... may be posting them, decorating a Church with it will be a better idea?

Hmm, I will see if I can talk to someone. Are you under 18 by any chance? There is a publisher I met who specializes in devotionals written by youth for youth. I can see if I can find the books they gave me...

Heh....thanks. I am so not under 18 however...
Now it's not to say that the images from the series have not been published pretty widely in books and magazines but a full on coffee table book is a whole other animal...

True, did you say you self published already?

On blurb.com....but quite honestly I don't count that as publishing. Though I have had a number of these images appear in books and on the Christianity Today website. There might just be some larger timing at play though...

True. The Lord works on his own time! However, there are places you can get your own books printed on demand. If you wanted to offer them at a gallery show or something like that lulu.com is one that is well rated. And if your super crafty Martha Stewart did a segment on how to bind your own books (without a ton of special equipment).

Thank you...
I actually did a version on Lulu about 2 years ago. The printing was pretty substandard from the version I got. Blurb is a publisher on demand and it's been there for over a year. It's here [link]

But with most things like this the base cost is so high that it's almost prohibitive....
However I really believe this is a timing thing. I've run it before publishers and so far the answer is no. My efforts need to be thrown behind making the new series which will take me the rest of the year. So no real time to Martha Stewart this (though I love the art of book binding) If someone wants to represent this I am all ears...but the last time that happened with a major Christian gallery who took on the Stations (four years ago) I almost had to get a lawyer to even get the work original work back...

I do truly appreciate your support of this...

I hear you. Thanks for the warning about lulu (I had not seen there work first hand).

There is a long history of great works being ignored for years. So at least you are in good company.

I love how Jesus here doesn't look like the typical, very European looking Jesus most people seem to have in their heads. He looks realer because He wasn't white and doesn't look like it here. Wonderful work.

Thank you....that was my goal. The actor is my friend Paulo who has traditionally been my model for Jesus for about 13 years. Will add the rest shortly...
