Description Dancer/choreographer Naiomi Goldberg. We wanted something that was not just a standard dancer's portrait. Then I saw her stretching and I saw those feet, just covered in bruises and cracks.

When your little girl wants to be a ballet dancer...show her this...

I really like this, you can almost feel the stress we put on our feet when we dance with the way you captured hers. As a dancer, I have to say, I would like that as a poster, because it's a true representation and most shots of a dancer's feet are tucked away in pointe shoes and you don't see the damage wrought upon them.

ahhh yes, that is what I true dancers feet look like. I've been dancing since I was 4...it's not an over reaction, things can get pretty ugly

God... those feet are amazing. I can't believe how much pain a ballerina will put herself through.

And the amount of detail you've managed to capture is astounding. I /love/ that this isn't at all typical. I love that she could be *anyone*.

gorgeous.
if life is a road, is a river, is a dance. every person has a heart-beat. and the most beauty there is to show, the more there is to hide.

I don't think I can say more than what has already been said...but that it is beautiful in a very painful way. The dedication that dancers have is just incredible. Excellent lighting, too. It has a simple quality that sets off her feet quite well.
Your work is excellent.

yeah no kidding, i remember the pains and ugliness of feet after pointe shoes.... they can get back with you do creative movement/modern interpretive too if you do it barefoot...aaaah.... the selective focus in this is lovely and though i wish it crept up a little more, i wish i could have this picture on my wall.

it hurts to look at this. what's her own attitue towards the damage of her body she suffers from dancing? it seems to be worth it, hm?
i attended ballett lessons for six years when i was younger but that's the reason i quit.. sports are healthy but the dosis is the point, like always.

So does one for all the really important things in life.

Yes...and thank you. With all the technology available I still belive in getting the shot right in camera. I have also found that reality will always come up with something better than me....

jaakobou In reply to kevissimo [2004-02-26 10:21:37 +0000 UTC]

i end up doing a touch of leveling on most of my pictures..meh

what made me think it might be a tad manipulated was how crisp the breakage on her toe stands out in contrast to what sorrounds it which looks a touch blurry .. in fact..a few more points in the shot are crisp and others are a touch blurry.. but from your reply i get it's completely unmaniped and therefore... *shocked*

i wounder... would u mind sharing a lil technical info on this one such as distance from the feet and also the lighting u've used... the resulting picture is quite captivating and perhaps (probably) i'll learn some from your explanations.

cheers

kevissimo In reply to jaakobou [2004-02-26 18:02:49 +0000 UTC]

Sure.... It was all natural light (sunlight coming in from her studio door) I was shooting with a Mamiya 645 wide open with a 25 red. The sharp and soft zones came from the angle I was shooting. I focused on the cracks and was relatively close so the DOF was incredibly shallow. Other parts that were in the same zone, due to the angle, naturally came in sharper as well.

I was shooting it for a paper here in LA (She's a pretty well known Choreographer here) and they only had room for one shot, so they used another portrait I had done which actually showed her. Which is understandable. So this one was never published.

whoa... heavy tech talk

thank you for the info though most of what i got from it is that u used sunlight, a close position, interesting angle and focused on the cracks

since i'm not really any type of photographer i'll just ask about the DOF .. what is that?

i think u could maybe still do somthing with this picture in the future.. it's very good

cheers

p.s. thanks for the elaborate reply .. u deserve the cool seat on my page

kevissimo In reply to jaakobou [2004-02-26 20:54:34 +0000 UTC]

Heh...sorry that got a little tech heavy.... DOF is simply short for Depth Of Field (the area that falls into focus)

Just to make it more complicated DOF is effected by:
Aperature
Distance
Lens
Size of film plane

thank you .. if u won' use tech talk .. how will i learn

*going to check the net for a full DOF explenation*

a little over the top. but just a little. the beauty of the photo is not a question. very nice ideia. and i do really remember my dance shoes turning slowly into red.. and then darker red.. as the blood from the feet got dryer. in modern dance, we danced barefoot, like that... and you knoe waht, it hurted... it hurted very bad, but all in all, it was so damn good!! : )

that's quita a photo you've got here. : )

Amazing...

The postire is so delicate and yet strong...it's the sinthesys of teh two antithesys just like ballet... ballerinas are often taken for granted as fragile, when the dance actually brecquires a great deal of vigour and physical endurance.

The wrinkles and the veins as well as cracks, when takne out of context, and just as texture are simply beautiful.

And the fact that her feat are emerign out of dark into the light , to be seen in tehri full glory od deterioration..is so reminiscent of the fact that they wear those paralyzing ballet shoes, that cover up the mutalation, and serve a decoartive purpose...

Truly a wonderful shot!

Ouch. This picture tells so many stories. I love the rich tones and contrast. Great composition and lighting. But most of all you have captured the essence of this person, much more so than a portrait of her face would have. Gorgeous.

it's a beautiful portrait. and if my little girl wants to be a dancer, and really wants to be, this will be the PERFECT picture to show her. because it shows the hard work and sacrifice that ballet will demand.

sorry. i just love the pic
