Description I've been kind of inactive recently, because it seems everyone's birthdays/events/what have you have all come at once, plus I've had commissions I've needed to finish for deadlines etc. This is one of them. I must admit I was very trepidatious about drawing this as I had a very hard reference photo to work from (small, a bit blurry, awkward pose, very strong shadows where I couldn't see much detail...) but I was persuaded to try. I think it came out well despite the difficulties though Still, from now on I'm going to be more strict about what I can work from! Plus I haven't properly tried to draw a horse for several years! I did enjoy working with pencil again though.

Drawn with a variety of pencil grades and copious use of erasers.

:EDIT: Just realised there are some marks on it...those are from my scanner, and are not on the actual drawing... hmm I will have to clear those off.

This is an amazing drawing even if the reference was poor. You are a brilliant artist, my friend!

It's so beautifully soft! I really like the texture of the background. The shadowed areas (which I'm guessing were the ones hard to see in the photo) are really good, I love the variation of shadows around his neck, it looks fantastic!

P.S. The word "trepidatious" is not used nearly enough when it comes to describing artistic processes. xD

Thank you so much! I love doing soft shading, I like to use sponge brushes to blend and then I erase highlights, it's my favourite part of the process :3 And yep you are correct, the shadowed parts were the most tricky! It was especially difficult on half of his face.

Haha it definitely needs more use. Sometimes I just can't think of the right word to say XD I realise now I could have said anxious or worried but never mind. I figure someone has to use these uncommon words or they'll die out. Well that's my excuse anyway
