Amazing artwork. Absolutely fantastic.
I don't know the AU behind this, but I think this also works very well with the original game and the concept behind it. It must be so so very hard for Sans to keep on going. This moment, those words, the lights that comes from the flower is the only thing that gives him hope. When flowers go to sleep they usually close their blossom, so I imagine that the echo flowers simply stop shining when they go to rest. Which means that Sans will be left alone in the dark and those words of his brothers, his last ray of hope, are going to vanish. This fanart is extremely emotional and leaves an impact on the viewer. Personally, I enjoyed reading the comments here and even found a nice little story that warmed my heart.
But the most amazing part of this is your way of coloring here. You didn't draw a full background. Just a little space where Sans exists. Everything around him has already ceased to exist. The only thing that is alive in this world is him. This is how I interpret the composition of this artwork. The flower represents hope. Hope that will vanish. Sans's facial expression turned out simply amazing and I can't help but stare at this and rereading the words of the flower and wonder how much strength is must cost Sans's to not sob. He must be holding back. I'm sure he wants to cry and scream right now, but knowing that any noise from his side will erase the last memory of his brother, he stays strong and simply listens to these words. It's such a sad picture.
I don't know how to put this without repeating myself...
but this fanwork left a big impact on me and gives me the chills...

so im making this worse but.... im imagining someone (probably frisk/chara since theyve gone this route, or just some monster doing it accidentally) finding this , then starts talking, thereby "overwriting" Papyrus's last "legacy"

Yeah...it certainly was a good thing. While it lasted.
This was the last echo flower in the Underground that still carried a voice. Planted on the border of Waterfall and Hotland, Sans could feel the heat radiating from his front. He smiled a rue smile as he remembered when Papyrus had found him there. He thought the place was secluded enough that Papyrus wouldn't find him and he could get a nap in peace. Of course, his brother being himself, he had a maximum of twenty minutes of total silence---not even enough to fall in to REM sleep. As quickly as he had fallen asleep he was shaken awake by his brother and brought back to his station.
As quickly as Papyrus's presence had been there, it was gone. And now his voice was going too.
In Sans's years as a scientist he had half-assed a project studying how long an echo flower carries any one voice. It was a surprisingly long amount of time---about 72 hours. Sans had fallen asleep there 71 hours and 58 minutes ago.
"SANS! YOU FELL ASLEEP AGAIN?! GOOD THING YOU GOT SUCH A COOL GUY WATCHING OVER YOU!"
Sans tapped the center of the flower again, clinging to every word of every replay. He wasn't ready to let this go, but his cell phone had no recording capability, and Papyrus's phone had dissolved with him, just like everything else. Everything but the scarf.
"SANS! YOU FELL ASLEEP AGAIN?! GOOD THING YOU GOT SUCH A COOL GUY WATCHING OVer y..."
Sans tapped desperately at the center of the flower, trying to conserve every moment.
"SANS! YOU FELL ASLEEP AGAIN?! GOOD THING YOU GOT SUCH A COol guy..."
Tears pricked the corners of his eyes.
"SANS! YOU FELL ASLEEP AGAIN?! GOod thing..."
He shook his head desperately, clutching the red piece of cloth to his chest, then pressing it against his bandaged forehead, unable to watch as the understimulated flower folded in.
"SANS! You fell..."
"SANS! ..."
"SANS!"
"sans..."
The voice cut out, and the flower closed in on his phalange. He kept it there, the feeling in itself something of a comfort, before pulling it back out.
The silence had never been more deafening.
