Turning this thing must be a bitch!Β  Not to mention going across waterways and traveling through towns and such!

Trick question... how do you turn in it

I think turning has something to do with steam-powered gyroscopes and some bouncing... 8)

I love the ancient design and the sketchy art style used for this pic. Great job!

I did not show the previous & unfortunate single-rail/monorail version. 8/

Unfortunately this would actually work. Β I imagine you have got a flash boiler and a high speed cylinder cylinder engine with a direct connected self excitation 600VDC generator taking up all the room in there

Solution - bolt all the hardware on the outside of the passenger cabin. Β Or, affix a walk-around cabin around a central mechanical array. Β The caterpillar track could still encircle the revised layout.

As I said; unfortunately it WOULD actually work. Β I was being sarcastic. Β

I'm just making an observation; it's similar to WWI tank designs where the engine and gearbox were situated in the same enclosure as the operators (driver, loader(s), gunner(s), tank commander). Β It must have been a horrible environment in which to work, given the fumes, the heat, hot oil and lubricant splashing around, and the opportunity to get tangled up in a drive shaft when the vehicle bounces over rough terrain or absorbs artillery fire.

These machines are awesome for the mechanical ingenuity, but best viewed as an observer rather than a participant. Β

An environment I have been in and which I would call paradise.

A steam roller for you of the same principle. Β modelengineeringwebsite.com/Ch…

That's a cool design, with the drive wheel around boiler. Might make maintenance difficult, though.

I have a friend who works with a team to restore and drive old steam locomotives. Apparently it's more hazardous than most people realize; a little inattention to your water level or steam pressure may result in a spectacular explosion.

It would assuredly make maintenance more difficult, but steam is labor intensive.

I restore and drive steam engines of all kinds, including locomotives. Β You'd be surprised how not dangerous it is if one has got half a brain. Β
