'Warm place' is a very intimate work featuring a lovely interpretation of Berry Punch, posing by a fireplace in a minimally rendered interior.
The combination of black, white, raw umber and creamy mid-tones effectively describe tonal values; as they artfully depict both subtle an bold differences in light. The grainy texture of the raw umber rendering produce a 'fuzzy' and 'warm' feeling, which is a fitting aesthetic for the subject matter. The soft white highlights on the figure is remarkable, especially when observing the gradation of tones on the stripes of Berry Punch's leggings.
The application of line is quite loose, sketchy and expressive, suggesting slight movement that could be observed from a living breathing figure holding a pose like this. The use of soft mass shading in addition to hard scratchy line are integrated well to suggest texture and tone.
Berry Punch's form is structurally simplified taking into account the almost cylindrical form of her front hooves, the sharp angularity of her almost triangular muzzle and smile, the extremely spherical form of the head and her semi-circle eyes. In contrast to those geometric simplifications of the pony form; her mane, tail and scarf fibres are very organic. However the negative space created from her hair are very triangular, and this helps to blur the distinction of organic and geometric form.
Compositionally the figure is slightly off-centre, which allows us to greater appreciate her form as well as the shadows that mimic it in a soulful repetition. In observing the figure as a whole, Berry Punch's pose resembles an inverted 'N' shape, creating more interesting negative space, whilst at the same time exuding cheeky playfulness in her facial expression and body language.
The way Berry's tail is flicking back towards herself, in addition to the stripes on her clothing, encourages the viewer to bring their gaze back to the figure. Horizontal and vertical lines found in the fireplace grating and the black wall border, give a sense of added seclusion and security but don't distract the viewer too much from the figure.
A minimalist, yet warm, atmospheric and emotive work, 'Warm place' is a fantastic digital drawing; fusing expressive line with soft gradation and organic with geometric form.
