Yeah, it's a cross between a jelly fish and some other animal that uses gas to fly, if I remember correctly-it's been a while since I read the book. Basically it's part of a group of creatures fabricated by scientists-informally known as "Beasties"- to be used as weapons etc-for example, Leviathan, the book's title, is a giant whale/airship!
