Description Yay, finally finished! And no...I wasn't supposed to be doing this...I was supposed to be studying for finals, but I REEAAAAALLLY wanted a break from anatomy. >_<;;

Media: 2B pencil for sketching out the idea, 0.05mm Micron for inking, Prismacolour pencils, silver and gold brushpens
Time: Including sketching and inking, probably around 5-6 hours, ish. 1 of those hours was last night, 2-3 today, and 1-2 was spent sketching and inking.

Seriously, I don't know how Ariel kept her hair so clean and red...after all, when you're at the bottom of the sea, you're BOUND to get kelp and algae growing in your hair, no matter how many times you brush it with that sea anemone

Also, after researching the growth patterns of mermaids and true characteristics (ha.... ), this is how it goes. The gill slits are just under the rib cage, and their bodies are more elongated to allow for greater water-lung capacity (since they don't breathe air, duh). They also allow algae to grow on their skin for both camouflage purposes and, for females, "make-up" to be more attractive to males.

Jewelry is a must for both females and males; seashells and also deep-sea trench anemones are good for shaping and carving into beads and ornaments. Most female mermaids go without the shell-bra thing; it's actually a sign of royalty or wealth in the mercommunity. Managing to find two shells of the same color is also an anomaly; most merpeople are deep-sea creatures where light is sparse. Merpeople who hold high status in their community often possess anglerfish, flashlight fish or gulper eels (which have bioluminescence to lure their prey), which in turn allows the mermaid to find similarly-colored shells.

Fins and tails typically grow at first by the color of their tails (the only common shades being green, blue, and greyish-black), fading into a lighter color as they grow and get thinner. The green at the tips of all fins and tails is due to the algae-growing again...it's a pain to clean them, I tell you! This merqueen has been through quite a few brawls to get where she is today; that's why her tail is shredded to pieces. This is also a sign of status; merpeople move about in their communities by staging fights among both males and females alike.

Despite how pretty they might look, these creatures are fierce, and you don't want to mess with them! Surprisingly, females are also larger and stronger than males. The whole Poseidon thing? *pshaw* He was nothing more than a little boy who managed to spear a shark and save a community. Humans like to pimp him out and stretch the story.

By the way...her name is Fuchiko Dalaiha (last name first, typical Japanese style!). Thanks ~gnownaym and ~Xenosphere111 !

Pretty! Are you open for requests?
If so, I was wondering if you could draw me a mermaid of a certain design. The picture is the newest one in my gallery. ^^ (she's holding a teal pearl)

A simple sketch is fine too

Actually, I'm not currently open to requests due to the fact that it's finals week at my university right now, but perhaps some other time Thank you for the comment!

Absolutely beautiful. Great color choice. Would be a perfect character in an undersea fantasy story.

Ok, I think I know what arigatou means from that song, but otherwise I'm lost.

....huh? What song? "Arigatou" or "arigato" means "thank you", and "arigatou gozaimasu" means "thank you very much".

the "domo arigatou Mr. Roboto". And for such a classic rock guy like myself, I'm ashamed I can't think of it... Maybe it's STYX? Damn....

But anyway, in reply, you're very welcome.

I actually know the lead singer's daughter, Hannah. She's my age. We grew up across the street from each other and went to the same high school/middle school.

That's really cool. I once met Howard Scott, the guitarist and songwriter of WAR. I met him when I was in a band a few years ago and he gave a helpful critique. Great experience.
