Any time you can see the pattern of the clouds mirrored on the desert floor,. I think it's absolutely fascinating.

Most excellent. I've got a hook on my tripod and only used it once so far. I'm sure I will need more weight. That bag full of rocks sounds like an excellent idea.

Thanks, James On this day, a hand on the shoulder of the tripod was pushing down to damp vibrations from strong gusts exaggerated by long focal length.

Many thanks Even with a tripod, the wind was so strong that the ISO had to be pushed to reduce motion blur in exchange for 'grain'.

I use 3 tricks when I find myself in those situations, hang weight from my tripod (backpack, bag of rocks . . etc), shoot low to the ground, get to the leeward side of a wind block (car, tree, boulders, group of friends) . . as for ISO now days with the newer cameras High ISO is not noisy, shooting at 1600 or higher can be clean. Sometimes the noise adds to the picture when using it as another effect for atmosphere.
Overall I really liked the photo, I would give is a bit more pop, but again that depends on what you were trying for, it's all part of how we as photographers interpret the scene or what we want our viewers to feel when viewing the pictures.
like I said and don't take any critique to seriously or personal, we all view the world through our own colored glasses, be it rosy bliss or putridity of envy/jealousy . . keep up the shots, I am enjoying the desert shots immensely, I miss that area most for Landscape photography.

Thank you, I appreciate your comments and advice! Yes, new tripods have so many improvements such as bubble levels, quick releases, on-camera shoe, stabilizers, and counterweight hooks that it's no longer a hassle to set up. As for high ISO, the present camera tapers off into grain artifact at 1600 and is tolerable at 800. The wider angle lens goes "soft" in low light, so there are improvements to seek in the next purchase. Still leaning toward the Sony Alpha 900 with Zeiss lenses as it's tough to cough up coin for an H4D with matching zoom and even harder to pack it on long hiking trips. Cameras and vehicles should not be priced the same - at least on the basis of weight.
