Description Because my monitor makes colours ridiculously dark, I've been fiddling around with this piece for ages trying to make it not look like ass on any computer but mine. I've finally given up.

This piece is very, very old - I drew the lineart when I finished KH:COM, but for various reasons I never finished colouring it. It's therefore uncanon to anything that happened in KH2 (s'what I get for being lazy, I guess )Basically, it's a tribute to the KH Final Mix Showdown of Fate, with Riku and Sora replacing Sephiroth and Cloud, because Riku and Sora are pretty much the successors of Sephiroth and Cloud - spiritually, that is, not literally (while you /could/ probably make a case for Riku being Sephiroth-spawn, Cloud is only what, 8 years older than Sora in KH1? Ew). Similar appearances, similar character dynamics, etc. So this is my version of what would have happened if the two of them had met in the Coliseum, some time post-COM - so Riku has longer hair but no blindfold, and Sora has his new clothes but his hair's not quite as blond as in KH2.

I'm still not quite happy with the darkness and contrast, so feel free to C&C and tell me if you think it's too dark/saturated/whatever.

Enjoy.

This is beyond amazingness and awesomeness!
The colors are so great and involving...I feel like jumping right into the pic.
It's so vibrant and vivid..it's easy to get dragged back into the action of Showdown of Fate. I think Riku and Sora Showdown of Fate is incredible.....amazing job! I am forever amazed.
Can't imagine how long this took....
How you did their weapons, clothes, wings, eyes, expressions, everything amazed me. I can't express anymore how I feel about it..I wish I could but my vocabulary's exhausted.
Another bit I like about this picture is the blue and red energies sparking around Riku and Sora...also, the way you did the lighting makes it have a really deep, lively feeling to it...like a video game, again that you can just jump in and interact with the characters. It's brilliant.

Wow, I think that's the nicest comment I've ever gotten It took longer than I care to think about, to be honest; the tedious bit (once I'd scanned it in) was really just cleaning up the lineart, though. I /am/ fairly proud of the lighting, too - I spent quite a while working out how to get it looking how I wanted it. Glad you like it.

Don't worry about it being too dark, I wouldn't want it any lighter than it is now. Looks great! You did a really good job with the lighting, getting some of it relected on their skin. The wings look amazing, and also really good job illustrating the keyblades. This is a very well done illustration!

KatKitChan In reply to AnkoArt [2007-09-09 02:05:32 +0000 UTC]

Well, that's good to know. Thanks! This piece was a bit of a crash course on lighting for me - I had the primary light source, then all those little secondary ones from the lightning, and then the reflected light. Glad you like it.

Thanks! Oathkeeper was the harder one, because it has a lot of different colours and curly bits, and a more detailed keychain. (Everyone always draws the Oathkeeper keychain as a little paopu fruit. Dunno why. o_O)

wow, i think it looks amazing!!!
and the darkness (since i guess there's some that is unwanted) fits the mood very well
and i absolutely luv the detail too, w/ the keyblades, clothes, wings/feathers, etc.

KatKitChan In reply to blackinuyaju [2007-09-08 05:22:05 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Well, I was trying to get it dark, but the problem is that my screen displays things as darker than they are so I was pretty much shading blind. "Hmm, this bit's black...and this is a slightly lighter shade, but it still looks black...and this is a more purply black...I CAN'T SEE ANYTHING!"
Thanks! I put quite a bit of work into some of those.

Yeah, I went a little dodge-crazy towards the end. I'd tried to keep it low-key while colouring, then when I'd almost finished I sat back, looked at it, and thought: "NEEDS MOAR SPARKLE."

I really like! I dont think it's too dark at all! XD
I'm still working on my ability to color in photoshop. I was wondering, how in the world do you do lightning and make it look like it's glowing/shining/whatever?
I'm still stuck there, (also I cant draw lightning worth crap.)
So some advice would do as well. XD If you would that it...?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KatKitChan In reply to NinjaNobody [2007-09-02 14:35:15 +0000 UTC]

Sorry I took so long to respond, I've been away.
Basically, you draw the shape of the lightning in white on a separate layer - if you don't have a tablet, I'd recommend the polygonal lasso tool to make it look properly jagged - then lock the transparency and double click on the layer to bring up the layer options. Set the Outer Glow to whatever colour you want, then fiddle with the size and spread until it's about what you want. Finally, set the Outer Glow on Linear Dodge, or Screen if you have below PS7. Then go to Inner Glow and do the same with a lighter and more yellowy shade of the same colour.
If your background's lighter, the glow may be too light at this point, so you can duplicate the lightning layer and multiply it if you want.
Feel free to ask if you need more help on this or any other tips, I'm still learning myself but I'd be happy to help if I can.
