Ooohhh Cio, how can it be that all the cetacean artists are posting gorgeous shit within days of each other? And you even put out two paintings??Β
Seriously, I admire you and your work sooo much. You have creative, colourful pieces, of high quality with interesting perspectives, and you just keep making them. It's very, very impressive - especially to someone who has many ideas but just barely ever finishes them. Aerial-view breaching whales is definitely something that has crossed my mind before; I've seen some photos, and the way the water splashes when they land is just fascinating! So I am so so excited to see a painting from you showing exactly that. It's very cool. Great job on the splashes, especially since you did them all yourself and by hand. I usually don't have the patience for them anymore haha.
Also, I just love the overall colours and lighting. So dark and mysterious, but with beautiful shimmers like from the moon or spotlights.
My only piece of 'critique' would be what Nimkish mentioned too, that the left (for the whale) fluke looks a little odd from this angle. I think it should be thinner overall, since we're looking straight down it, basically. Like here:Β c1.staticflickr.com/2/1022/831…
But other than that, awesome piece all around!Β

Haha, this is a rare thing for me actually to put more than one drawing in a month! It takes a lot of effort to finish some piece as I'm oftenly quite unmotivated to draw, and perhaps that's the reason I have lots and lots of started, but not finished projects. *looking at my unfinished PSDs folder filled with 211 files* However, the times, when I want, can and do draw a lot, are just precious! Feels like all those artblock "sufferings" pay it off.
Getting back to the drawing itself, in the beginning I thought the work would become troublesome. References for this angle are almost impossible to be found, had to use a couple of videos to understand what to do and how to do. Nevertheless, the whole process happened to be "smooth" and organized. To not get lost in the splashes and foam, I divided the water area on sections and did them one by one without zooming in too much. Ergo, the whale's tail became the only problem here. I guess that's not just the hard angle, I indeed should pay more attention to flukes, as they seldomly appear in my pieces. o:

Thanks for the comment!

Beautiful! I can imagine how annoying that splash could have been but you did a great job on it! The right fluke looks a little off but the left fluke looks perfect! I love the subtle little heart spot there. I really love the shine effect and that tiny eyepatch.

You make such beautiful paintings!! Great work! Β

Thank you!
I see what you're talking about with the fluke, I had doubts about it. Still have to practice more with flukes, this is, perhaps, the only problematic part of cetaceans I have to spend more time on during working.

Oh, and that heart-like freckle here IS lovely! The character itself has this spot, that's why I did the flukes such way, so it could be visible.Β

I think the base (the black area) is too thick connecting to the peduncle.Β  I think the tip of the fluke should fold over. This picture has a fluke in a similar position: media.gettyimages.com/photos/o…

I'm not good at flukes either! And the pecs still get me! Haha so I've been doing a few studies lately to try and get them up to scratch!

Cio, I just love your work. This angle is so unique; a perspective that one doesn't usually think of for a breaching orca. I like that you think outside the box on a lot of your pieces. Makes me wanna try some new things myself! Awesome work. Awesome.

Thank you so much!
The angle, no doubt, was a risky decision. It was quite hard to find the references for the water and how does it "behaves" when such huge things as grown whales reach it after breach. With help of other I got 3 tiny pics and a video, but seems like that was enough.

I feel like there some sort of "luck" that I have to fight with all this watery fukin things like splashes, drops, foams and etc. And there's no way to get away from it, because these are commissions and not my personal works (which I love to abandon and forget about them, lmao)

At least this is an opportunity to bring my skill level to the next one without a chance to say "too laze fo dis" Β ( Ν‘Β° ΝœΚ– Ν‘Β°)

i know that feel. water is kind of a little bitch and its always a tossup whether or not it comes out good or not. BUT I THINK YOU DO A PRETTY COOL JOB.

THAT SPLASH..... the care and detail in the water and foam is very apparent. I also love the tiny heart/bean shaped little freckle near the tip of the fluke. so cute!

KatherineKei In reply to Aurosoul [2017-04-05 10:30:41 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

Water had taken a couple of takes before it actually looked good. There was a lot of guessing here since the only references I could find were really tiny photos and a video (which actually is an intro for a 1977 thriller "Orca", that can be found on YT).

And the heart-shaped freckle, yeah, I adored that too! It wasn't my intention to do this - the character I was asked to draw actually has that.
