Description First submission since Feburary. The Merlin actor Colin Morgan's expression turns me on to drawing again. He can kill me casually with his smiles anytime.

---a little update about me

If you have noticed my lack of activity... The past few months have been a little confusing for me. Every day I arrive home exhausted after work. So I'm making small steps sorting out my real life.

This quick sketch does not say 'I'm back'. Rather it was the magic of Merlin (some day... I will do a proper portrait of Colin!) made me spend 2 hours or so on it.

Thanks for viewing! I hope you can also feel warm hearted seeing this picture!

Oh I have also enabled 'critiques'. But this quick drawing may not deserve careful critiques. Anyway I'm enabling it and hopefully I might get something... Thanks!

The mark making of the pencil in this portrait is so brilliant that you have captured and conveyed a great likeness of the actor, especially through the features like the eyes, mouth and nose. The charm and slight playfulness of the actor is also shown, from the glint in the realistic and well drawn eyes to the very warm and open smile, which has been achieved through great depth of tones.
As far as any portrait goes, this is superb and the talent you show is astounding, and as far as i can tell the face has been focused on the most. This does work, to show his emotion and warmth, but perhaps more details and tones on the hair and neck/clothes would also bring more realism to it, as the hair does seem to fade in the background.
However, overall it's a brilliant piece of work that looks very realistic and photo like. An inspiration to me and i am sure, many other deviants. Astounding and excellent.

Thanks for giving this a critique. "the charm and slight playfulness" is exactly what made me draw this. And I'm very glad that you can see it. And I'm most happy that occasionally there are people coming along and tell me that I could inpsire them - that is a great pleasure for me! Thanks!

I love your sketchiness: how you can bring out the likeness of someone with just casual gestures is wonderful, let alone the personality. Also I like that the most detail is on his eyes and smile, which draws your eye. The farther you get from the 'important' stuff, the more the detail fades out. I think the sharpness of the lines of his jaw (his right) are perhaps too dark; they draw my eye a little more than they should, but his eyes and smile are so nicely done that I get pulled back away from it. I hope to see more work from you: as tired as you've been, it doesn't seem to have hurt your drawing skill.

Thank you very much for the critque!

Looking back at this pic, I can see the eye-drawing right jaw. He does has some interesting structure in that part so I have spent some more strokes on it. Maybe I should've done the 'main' features with more elaboration... I'm glad that his nice smile pulls you back to the main 'oint'. (but the expression itself is hardly my achievement but the actor's and the photographer's)

I think your comment reflects how I usually draw portraits: Usually an interesting expression is my motivation to do a portrait, and when it comes to the actual drawing, I see the picture as a structure, where there is more intricate structure I spend more time on it.

I think that there are a good many artists who can create good likenesses of faces, but to capture and convey such emotion, the exuberant joy and playfulness in his eyes and in his smile, you the artist obviously felt that same emotion, and conveyed it perfectly here, and it is addictive, because the viewer cannot help but identify with that and smile back. The focus is on the face, exactly where it should be, and the expressive hatch lines seem to radiate out that joy like an aura. Great art is captivating and subjective- we feel it. Wonderful piece!

Thanks Loraine! You have said exactly what I feel about people portraits, and more than my skills (and time) allow me to convey.

I would have voted this unfair (not deserving five stars in every category, really!) but that would mean erasing this critique.

The eyes are particularly good. A high degree of warmth and love is expressed in them - put there by yourself, I suspect. The lips and teeth are also good. And I think your technique has improved. You appear to be developing a better understanding of texture, shading and the forms and shapes that make up the human face. And you really are beginning to use the pencil...^^

"A high degree of warmth and love is expressed in them - put there by yourself, I suspect."
I'm really happy that you see that in a mere drawing! (Although I think that's just what I saw in the reference photo which made me so want to draw it. ) I think I'm beginning to understand why people say art is a form of expression.

Hi Kate! Long time, no see! I gave you a critique I know you think this is just a "quick sketch", which is an under estimation of it's value, but honestly, it needs no further rendering because it conveyed perfectly that joy and exuberance behind the smile and those eyes, viewers feel that, and the focus is just where it should be- that is really the whole point of great art.

I think it takes just as much talent, skill and vision to render and convey a thought or feeling in as few lines, objects, colours, etc., as it does to render everything in the most minute detail. Sometimes too much detail, the viewer gets lost in it, and the central point is lost.

Never under estimate the power of a "sketch"
