Description This is Orkid, a female orca at Sea World of California. I painted this in acrylics from a photo I took of her. Just thought the photo looked rather nice. I'm pleased with the way it turned out.

Hi There!
You have just earned yourself an O.D.D.(oibyrd's daily devs) Traditional art - paintings - animals feature ! congrats!

of all your painted pieces i'd say that this one is my favorite i specially like the part of her that is under the water, probably because it looks so real.

That painting looks amazing. You did a wonderful job with it! How long did that take you? Mine usually take 3 days or so, but they *never* turn out like that!!

Hmm... I know I started it after Thanksgiving dinner (was bored) and finished it up the next day. Probably 5-6 hours, I think.. That's pretty quick for me actually. Usually I take eons.

Thanks for the comment!

Wow I thought this was a photo! How do you get so close to the whales? The closest I get is in the stands lol.

That picture was taken from the skywalks, which are right above the water at Sea World California.

Ah. lol your seaworld must rock. SWT sucks. the closest we get is in the stands. I dont even think there is an observation tank.

Do they still let people sit in the stadium between shows? That's what California used to do, before they got the Closeup exhibit.

very impressive painting, i love this. i'm afraid there's very little i can say which hasn't been said allready. like the rest of the commenters, i'm amazed at the way you make the water actually look wet, and reflective. great stuff.

Thanks for the critique! And you're spot on about the blue. Now I kind of want to change it, but I'm scared messing with things. I have this habit of considering things "done" and then doing a "Well, what if I tweak this a bit... and that..." and destroying the thing.

I think what I did (and this was a couple of years ago, so I'm not 100% sure) is use one color for the base blue and then lighten it for some of the water, and lighten it a bit more for the rest. But anyway, thanks for the note. I'm going to start work on another one in a month or so, after I finish some research, and your advice will be helpful when I go to work on that.

I saw your forum post, and thought I'd drop in.
You seemed honest about your work, and about people commenting,
and I like that.
I LOVE how there are contrasts between the way you handle the paint in the water, and on the whale. They are two completely different elements, and it seems you have handled them nicely.
Photographic work is great - it's recording exactly what you see - something the Realists lived for.

My one critique: Even though this is from a photo - it seems the blue of the water is only one blue. It looks like you have played with its tones (with white and black) to change the value of the blue. What I think would really make this painting stick out is if there were slights colour changes in the water. It would 1st of all give the pool more depth, and the image a stronger sense of presence - as if hey, this is a deep delicious pool of cold water, and here is a beautiful Killer whale swimming in it - not a - this is a flat canvas painted blue and the whale black.

That's my only tiff. But otherwise Kim, a beautiful painting. It seems you know what you're doing with brushes and can manipulate light wonderfully.

Hey That's cool. I thought it was a photo for sure. Whales are neat. I just came from a cruise to the caribbean and was really mad I didn't see a dolphin or whale. There was a whale by the ship one morning but my lazy ass slept in that morning

Eh I put the watermark there cause people are into stealing. (Too many of my friends have this problem, and I don't want it to happen to me.) This one doesn't have the watermark because I scanned it and stuff before I started adding those. Aren'tcha lucky? The eye is just in front of the eyepatch, right above the mouth corner, where that little black chip comes out. One usually doesn't see the eye unless the sun is hitting it just right or you're very very close. It kind of blends in with the black.

This picture *kind of* gives an idea where the eye is, but it's very hard to see:

That looks awesome, you are a great painter. You really got the effect of water. I like this one the best out of your gallery because it looks badass (not saying your other ones dont) but it also doesn't have the huge watermark over it. My only question is where is his eye? But that is so minor, great job on this.
