Purple martins really travel on their annual migration. According to researchers, they head as far south as Argentina. People here in the Texas Hill Country put up houses like the one pictured here. Martins and Mexican Free-tail bats are the two major natural bug control mechanisms we have.

I'd never seen purple martins until I took these photos. At least, not that I know of. Around here we mostly have sparrows... which apparently love to kill martins (and many other species) and steal the nests. It's sad how few bird species I can identify. The situation must be remedied!
