Description Happy Birthday ~Broken-Miho ~~

I redesigned her characters Morie and Mariel as alchemists akin to GUST's Atelier series. Because I generally designed them on the spot.. this could actually serve as their respective profile images as well lool.

I spent a lot of time on trying to color with the brush tool in paint tool sai.. and then I gave up using it wholly because I couldn't replicate the softness in Kishida Mel's works in the end lol. In attempt to recoup for lost time, I used whatever shading method I generally how to use on Mariel.. and then reshade much of Morie. I then gave up on detailing the background and just painted everything for the sake of finishing.

Anyway, Morie is in the left and Mariel is in the right~

Anyway.. I hope you like this Tsu~

Right when I saw the thumbnail, it really felt akin to the Atelier series (the more recent games). Well,, actually, your art reminded me of the classic/older parts of the series, but Broken-Miho's characters reminded me of the recent stuff. x'D

I think you did a fantastic job giving it the GUST/Atelier feel, something that brings out the more recent and more classic stuff. And I think the shading actually quite resembles Mel-sensei's art in places.

Even though I think the Atelier series has gorgeous art, some of the characters (especially the main ones) feel really fanservice-y at times (which I think is actually a GUST thing and nothing to do with Mel-sensei), so it's also nice to see art and designs that don't have that kind of fanservice to them.

I'm very glad to hear that~~ thank you for your well-thought comment! >w<

I'm also pleased to hear that the illustration also has a feel of the older games. I'm curious.. what Atelier games do you consider to be 'older/classic'?

The fanservice in some instance is intentional according to what I can derive from the detailed interviews found in the back of my copy of Atelier Official Chronicle. It didn't explicitly list reasons why that's the case.. but I presume it's more of marketability strategy while staying within a boundary. At most, it's mostly a GUST thing to do because Mel-sensei's initial Rorona design had her in culottes but it was rejected. Kishida Mel definitely isn't a stranger in fanservice.. but he is often seen with works that doesn't make use of that marketing strategy and instead focuses on his strengths which are details (sometimes very severe) and the softness/gentleness his style emphasizes quite well~

Anytime, I'm always happy to enjoy and comment on lovely art~!

Mainly the ones before Iris, but for some reason, I can only usually think of the first three when I think of the older stuff. I always think of Atelier Marie actually whenever I see/hear the Atelier series mentioned, but I recognize Elie too (which makes me feel bad about sometimes forgetting Elie, especially since I think of Judie before Elie even).

When I originally saw the outfits Mel-sensei had drawn, I really liked those (and I think they fit a bit more for a alchemist). But then when I really thought about how kind of covered Rorona is, and even less covered Totori and Meruru are (I think a CD cover in particular was what actually made me pause), I felt like... Well, I don't know. They're really cute, but when I really start looking at them [and thinking of their age, as even Meruru is the only one who even starts out as the oldest at 15 (Rorona being 14 originally and Totori being 13)], it gets kind of weird.

I definitely think there's a time and place for fanservice (and I think there should be a level of fanservice placed on characters of certain ages). With Rorona, her own outfit isn't actually that fanservice-y (some art makes it feel like it's more than it is), but Totori's and Meruru's kind of start pushing it to me.

I do appreciate that Mel-sensei doesn't try to emphasize or make the fanservice more than it is. It's nice to see art that's beautiful and detailed, rather then simply trying to sell a certain moe look or fanservice. (A lot of games are doing that now, and how people react gets skeevy too.)

I see~ when I think of the older Atelier series.. I think of Marie as well. I wish there's a way to play the older games.. but only time will tell, I suppose.

The featured alchemists of Arland have cute outfits admittedly... but sometimes I wonder about how practical they are. For Totori in particular (and example, I suppose), I wonder how her jacket can stay in that position without slipping off from her shoulders.

Ah, I agree about leveling fanservice on characters of certain ages too. Sometimes the amount of fanservice on characters of certain ages baffles me when they can easily make a statement wearing less-revealing clothing. Hm.. I think that may be why I try designing outfits that doesn't rely heavily on fanservice~ lol

Perhaps that's one of the reasons why GUST chose Kishida as their lead character designer for the recent Alchemists of Arland games? If anything, I feel like the market has been saturated with enough fanservice along with that moe look..

Yeah, the only thing I can think of is emulators (and there is a technique I heard of that lets you play Japanese games on Dreamcast that's safe, but I don't know if it works for PS and PS2 games).

Yeah, I do love their outfits (and while I think Meruru is most guilty of impracticality and fanservice, it is incredibly cute, I just love the colors and style). Haha, and I was so puzzled with Totori's jacket for so long, but I just couldn't help but admire it.

I think recently, with Nora and the Time Studio coming out, I'm suddenly reminded that outfits can be stylish, have a lot or most coverage and be kind of impractical but still at least protective if not practical (I think they did their own little 'Atelier' series quite well as far as design goes~!).

Yeah, haha. I can understand why Rorona is aged up here, and the funny thing is, my friend and I discussed recently how Japan sometimes makes characters fourteen and yet the fanservice with them is... excessive (to me, that's just on the border of being loli, but safe enough to almost be a teen, so I wonder if it's a 'safe loli' age?). But yeah, same here, haha. I do like sexy outfits, but I always stop and make sure everything is age appropriate. x');

Yeah, I think that makes sense~. Kishida-sensei's art is very... Well, it's just gorgeous and is a great distinction amongst essentially everything else. I wish there were more Atelier and Skyward Sword art styles out there.

kariavalon In reply to MaruChiku [2011-07-20 06:15:33 +0000 UTC]

Yeah~ emulators are quite useful for situations like this~ I've used some before.. so maybe I'll give the older titles a try soon. And who knows.. it might help me (along with several dictionaries lol) improve my Japanese reading comprehension further.

I like the colors too~~ the impracticality is pretty evident on their clothing.. but overall, they're still pretty cute and markets itself pretty well.

I haven't read much into Nora and the Time Studio.. but it sounds like a pretty cute and fun game~

I can understand the aging up matter.. but at the same time, this caused quite a debate on whether it's right or not. I wonder how they're going to deal with the ages in Totori since so far, the website didn't list Totori's age.

Kishida's coloring is quite distinctive and from what I read in the Atelier Official Chronicle artbook.. he puts an emphasis on details because he isn't very versed in scenes that display a lot of action. And while I kind of got the idea that the backgrounds take a lot of time to do.. it turns out that there was an artist who did the backgrounds for the in-game CGs.

Yeah, I only used one to play Napple Tale, but my old computer was on the border of dying, so that didn't last long. I definitely think playing games in Japanese helps with reading comprehension~. I bought MOTHER 1+2 for the GB to play on my Lite, and it was quite a help. I had the guide still, but it was different for the EN ver and I apparently knew more than I thought~!

Definitely. It attracts guys and girls quite well, and needs minimal marketing (if done well).

Since it first popped up on the game site I go to, I've been following it and I'm quite impressed~. (And the music is good!)

Ahhh. Yeah. And I didn't know that. Also, I realize Rorona is 14 in her game and 22 in Totori in Japan. But since she's already 17 here, I wonder how they're going to handle that.

That's interesting! And a little comforting somehow? Haha. His art does remind me more of concept/design art, and I think he does some good posing+background in some, but I do see his stuff as much better when it's quite portrait-like. That's such intriguing information~.

Dude, mine is just as weird lol And now that I'm being forced to go back to full Photoshop at work because Sai won't run on MacOS it's turned even more random haha;;; Butn I can relate to the difficulty of making a tutorial when you don't have a clean and easy to explain method =_=;;

Psst, it's all research if it's got pictures in it >3>

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

kariavalon In reply to ehllychan [2011-07-11 00:27:21 +0000 UTC]

Yeah.. since my method is exactly what you call consistent.. I mean, it can stay consistent for a while.. but I usually try something different in attempt to lengthen my attention span haha. It's not always successful, but it kind of works.

I would use photoshop (more often).. if it weren't so laggy on my laptop. =\

l-lool I'll try making a tutorial later and see if I can make my explanations and pictures work.

Thank you~ ;A; I'm glad to hear that just from the thumbnail you could feel Atelier vibes from it haha. That means I did my job well. I didn't exactly mimic Kishida Mel's coloring style well though ;;. I like to think that I can do a similar job at soft coloring.. but I guess it wasn't meant to be lol.

Well in time you might become the second Kishida Mel XD
I wanna learn his style too. I watched his video and i have no idea what he did OTL

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

kariavalon In reply to TakemaKei [2011-06-25 06:32:42 +0000 UTC]

Ah good luck! Based on your gallery works so far.. you can draw Totori. However.. trying to get the gradients (and matching shading) on her clothing correct might be difficult for you?

That would be in a long time. And if anything.. I'd like to be recognized for what I can do and what my specialties are than to be known for being Kishida Mel #2 lool. I wouldn't be able to market myself as easily. xD

I quickly saw a video of him drawing too once~ I noticed he uses the brush tool heavily and it helps that he uses a wacom cintiq lool. If I had that.. I wonder how different my works will come out because what I draw by hand and what I draw on computer are has more noticeable differences than same.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TakemaKei In reply to kariavalon [2011-06-25 07:16:21 +0000 UTC]

i should be able to do gradient (havent tried though).
But i think i got scared of the amount of frills.

Hearing(or seeing) what you said make me feel better at myself. I will try to do it one day. and if you like i can note you the result ^^

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

kariavalon In reply to TakemaKei [2011-06-25 07:41:52 +0000 UTC]

Then try! o: If it doesn't work out.. then try it again in a different way~
Don't be discouraged by the frills~ if you pay attention enough.. it's actually not too difficult and is just tedious haha.
Another way is that you can simplify some of the frills since it's not necessary to draw every single fold on frills as Kishida Mel rendered Totori.

And sure~ you may note me your progress if it helps. ^^
I'm glad my comment made you regain a bit of confidence on the matter~

You don't NEED to replicate the softness. Your work is always soft. No matter what you do ^^ You're such a great artist, I wish I could come up with stuff like you can ^^

kariavalon In reply to Kierax [2011-06-25 05:39:34 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for your confidence on my work. >w<

In the end.. the actual illustration looked pretty soft. I guess it's because Kishida Mel uses more softer, yet noticeable tones/palettes than what I'm used to. Anyway.. what matters was that I got it done on time and it looks decent despite the switch in shading styles midway. xD
