It'd be better if you were photographing someone who actually earned the cultural rights to wear the headdress.

so someone who lives in their way has no right to wear their cultural headdress if the person is not of the right descent or what?

No, they don't. The feather headdress is for war heroes. This photo is cultural appropriation.

Sure it has significance. I'm a Christian; I know what if stands for. However, at the same time I cannot think of any denomination of Christianity or Catholicism where it's considered sacrilege for people who aren't important members of the church to wear crucifixes. Different denominations put a different amount of importance on symbols like that. I feel like it's kind of a gray area in that respect.
I think a comparison for a crucifix would be something like a Native American dreamcatcher. It's an item with important symbolism for many different tribes, but they don't object to other people buying and using them (because they're cool). In fact, a lot of reservations will sell dreamcatchers alongside other items to make money.

That's not to say that Christian and Catholic people should never be offended by a person wearing a crucifix. Someone wearing a crucifix out of spite would definitely be in the wrong. And I've heard of a restaurant in Japan that was completely decked out in Christian imagery, which, to be honest, made me feel a bit uncomfortable.

SO because the majority of Christians don't mind someone who's not christian wearing it's okay? As long as they're not doing it in spite? I feel like this photo is not trying to be spiteful and different people have different degrees on what they will tolerate.

I think a prime example would be Cher's performance of "half-breed" [link] She's wearing a war bonnet, she's a woman, and she's actually only 1/16th native american and yet many people who are half or part native american don't find this offensive but rather uplifting. On the other hand many were outraged to see Cher decked out in a headdress.

As long as they're not trying to be offensive I don't see why it should matter.

??? I'm native and how exactly is this offensive?

MarinusLamia In reply to Korbeaux [2013-12-07 02:45:09 +0000 UTC]

I'm Native too. Nice to meet you.Β

How is this offensive? Well to most tribes, it wouldn't be because not all tribes utilized sacred items such as the warbonnet (just like how not all tribes make Dream Snares therefore the commercialization of Dream Snares would not be culturally offensive to tribes who did not utilize the practice, whereas it would be to the tribes who did- such as the Ojibwa). However, the headdress is a sacred cultural item awarded culturally to the men of Native Plains tribes similar to how the purple heart is awarded to our American Military members. I/e: To those who have done a great service to our country, and our communities and tribes, and who have shown bravery and prowess, among other things. Each feather has significance. Each feather has meaning. Each feather is an act or deed performed.Β Β In traditional ages, the tribesmember receiving it had to often risk their lives to collect the feathers themselves.

Furthermore, the Headdresses of the Plains Tribes were awarded only to men (though there are a few accounts of tribeswomen being awarded such honors, these cases are few and far between and were often awarded under particular extreme circumstances and were harder for tribeswomen to obtain). Therefore, sticking a sacred item awarded only to those with the highest honors... on a naked individual who would otherwise more than likely not be able to be awarded one in the first place only serves to further fetishize and sexualize the item.

thank you for explaining, I can sort of relate, from what your saying, toΒ prayer feathers and medicine fans, its like when you see someone has made a fan out of died goose feathers instead of eagle or turkey

MarinusLamia In reply to Korbeaux [2013-12-07 05:09:24 +0000 UTC]

Well the fans are often a bit of a different story. Feather fans are found across a lot of cultures, all in their own unique styles and made from various feathers of birds important to the particular cultures. It's hard to go "oh well feather fans in general are appropriative", but if it's an obvious "fake" meant to mimic a specific say... Native traditional way of making it, it can be considered appropriative as Native Tribes are closed cultures who do not often share their practices with outsiders who are not from their culture. If you copied (as a random example, here) say... A Nordic method of doing so, however, it wouldn't be considered appropriative given that Nordic/Viking culture is anthropologically considered a "dead culture" that no longer technically exists in that manner, therefore their stuff is what is considered "open". But yeah, i mean... It's about the same concept still.
