Well, first of all, the leaves and the rain are based on a photo. The background here was copied, but manual and sooooo ardous 
When I finished all the background, EFFECTS: I applied in photoshop this option: Click in the layer of background and... Image/ Adjustments/ LEVELS and I gave more black and more white with this option for achieve this contrast (This is the best tool in Photoshop for make contrasts). Later, I've darked the corners of pic with a black and soft brush with opacity 5% and flow 50% (but never the centre of pic, only around the corners and edges) but I think it's better if you apply a "gradient tool" with radial gradient option (colours: transparent to black). And on lower right-hand corner I 've created too another lineal gradient in other new layer (this time with transparent and dark-blue, not black) with opacity 85% and later, the rest of this cape is erased (if you don't do this, you couldn't see Zel's face 
Yes, I know, I make life difficult for myself every time I draw
For characters and etc... I use this colouring technique, cuz I use a lot of layers in a pic and I think this one is the tidiest way for draw, as you can see, I draw with groups of layers: [link]

Yes, as you say, is the knowledge and combination between lights and shadows in each part of body. You allways have to bear in mind the 3D anatomy of body for achieve good effects (bones and muscles below skin). I studied in my carreer anatomy, that's the reason why I know more or less to achieve a decent effect in bodies, skins, BUT not in clothes, if you observe certain drawings, I don't know to colour clothes as well as skins

Zelgadis has never looked handsomer <3 I love his expression. I also like the effects of the sparkles and the colors you used---especially the backround. Excellent job <33 And yet another to add to my favs. Im never dissapointed in your art--nor will I ever be. ^_^
