Description [EDIT]- 12/10/16- It's time for improvement meme update. Hoho 2016 was a good year. :^)

[EDIT]- Changed one of my 2011 photos >< I did a lot more trad art that year and I dont think it was fair to show a digital drawing I referenced from;
[EDIT 2]- idk why I do these now when it's not even the end of the year, but looking at 2015 progress, I haven't been very happy with improvement; I think anatomy wise, I have improved a lot. I'm glad about that tbh, and the fact that I'm slowly more comfortable with drawing males, but I do still see a lot of mistakes.
Coloring on the other hand hasn't improved and I'm kind of disappointed ahh;; Overall, this year kind of looks similar to last year. Hopefully I can focus more. I haven't been able to draw much (I literally only have like 5-8 CG's done so far for 2015 and it's already half way into the year...sigh; ) But I was also busy with junior year and unfortunately, senior year won't be much better due to college apps and more school work, but I'll do my best..!
I'll try to fix this year (and last year's--) when it nears the end, to see if I could manage to bust out better drawings. ^^ I want to add in more drawings of males.......ahhhh

It's 2 am and I think why not :3c

Uhhhhhhh nothing really special-- I improve at a normal rate _(:3/
I did a lot of trad art huh-- I remember-- being proud of them the day I finished each of those.
Now I'm laughing at how bad they look LOLOL /trips into a trash can

But I've come a long way!! I hope I can extend this in a few more years and see where I take off from here~

I'm really glad for all of the support I received over the year and a half being on dA~ It really helps me improve and stay motivated to draw.

Clearly I wasn't as motivated for like 10 years before I started digital LOL

Gomen for bad quality--- AND A LOT OF TYPOS I SEE NOW CRAP

Wow, this is really inspiring;; You're one of the main artists that inspire me a ton, and seeing the improvement over 2014 really gives me hope since I'm the age now that you were around then haha. The gap from the first drawing to the last is mindblowing!

Here's to making this year a great year for art ;v;

The sudden change from 2013 to 2014 is absolutely terrifying! What happened there? What made you do such a huge jump in just an year? Anything else is a human improvement but that one step is beyond my comprehension, could you enlighten me?

Is it really a big improvement? I've honestly seen a lot better in just a year. Like-->

But anyway- I think it's just because I was trying to a different style and then I realized it didn't really fit what I liked, so I went for more "realistic" proportions. And I don't know, you can honestly force yourself to study and practice within a year. A year is actually A LOT of time to improve if you have the time to do so. It's totally not a competition to improve quickly tho. Just take however much time you need and know how to improve.

If I must say the truth this improvement meme here is not as much amazing as yours. Here the artist already was good in 2012 in proportion, anatomy, coloring etc, they just improved in perspective maybe, and generally, but it's an understandable improvement, I can see that in a year. Your drawings of 2013 look like somedoby else drew them compared to 2014 xD you suddenly learned anatomy, proportion, backgrounds, colouring, everything xD I'm really interested in understanding what's the process that an artist go through to improve like that because of course there might be some line of thoughts, some techniques, some way of feeling, that helps getting a better and faster improvement. I'm already 24 years old, I'd like to improve faster since in my 20years of drawing I didn't improve like that xD

Naah there's much more to his improvement haha. The range of values are much better, texture implementation, different range of colors, more depth, better anatomy (more muscle to define certain curves) etc.

For me, that year was mainly looking at a bunch of artist's work and testing it out. The backgrounds were especially referenced by Makoto Shinkai and Rella (pixiv ). I learned some of their techniques and tried it out on my own drawings. Experimenting is really important for an artist, so that your work doesn't stay generic or "not improve".

Plus, they're pretty simple backgrounds. Can't do those super-detailed-perspective-buildings that I see a lot of other artists doing. I focus more on composition of the human subject and surrounding details.

Also, I don't think my anatomy that year was fabulous either lol. Actually just looked back at it a few days ago and realized how cringe-worthy some parts of it are. It's actually fairly similar to my anatomy of previous years. It's just that I learned how to do somewhat dynamic poses. This year is honestly a much better year for me, in terms of anatomy and coloring.

I COMPLETELY FEEL YOU-- It feels like I improved on coloring a lot last year (but not much on anatomy),but this year I improved on anatomy/sketching more than coloring due to lack of time for digital art (I sketched/doodled a lot at class lol).I can definitely feel that your sketches have become more fluent and lively though,you should be proud! An improvement is and improvement,and you never know you may magically improve more in the next few months~ Keep going Kane,you're one of my inspirations definitely ;u;.

Is this what you would call... a prodigy? Your work is so amazing, and your progress even more so! What gets me is the quality of your work that you achieved at your age, it's so cool!!! It's nice looking up to somebody who is younger than me... but it also makes me feel unaccomplished

Ha ha! But I'm envy your abilities, I struggle so much, and I can't get it sometimes... Can you show us someday how you do some pieces? I try so hard to find my style and everything, but it's so difficult for me...

Holy mackerel. Elementary school you could already draw a lot better than, say, those people who make the children's menus at restaurants.
And being able to do the things you do now is just flat-out impressive! Seriously, that's almost kind of difficult for me to grasp.
If you don't mind my asking, and I hope this hasn't been answered on some FAQ somewhere, how much time on average does it take for you to finish one of these sorts of drawings? Pacing is awful difficult for me, I don't even know how one could handle all of the different facets.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kanekiru In reply to GammaRayFox [2014-07-13 07:20:08 +0000 UTC]

Haha think so? Tbh I used to be extremely proud of those dragon drawings and now they just don't compare to what I can do now. But hopefully in a few more years, I can laugh at the drawings I do now. ^^

Thank you very much for the kind words!

There's a FAQ in one of my journals I think? I'm not sure bc I used to delete a lot of journals, but back then it used to take me 2-5 hours to finish a drawing bc most if the time they didn't have color. Eventually when I got to 2011, they could probably take 6-8 hours.
My digital drawings now can take about 5-20 hours depending in complexity. Drawings with lots of charries go in that 20 hour range ^^
I don't mind answering btw~ that FAQ hasn't been updated in awhile;

I use Paint tool sai. The actual one isn't free, but a lot of people upload fake full versions that work just the same. If you search up paint tool sai free download in youtube, this user will offer the free download and a tutorial on how to install it.

Thank you!
