It is really obscene the amount of make up the male actors have to really wear for the filming, I sometimes think it is more than what women would wear on a regular basis outside the film industry...

The camera makes people look pale, so everyone needs make-up in TV.
(My Mum has a story of one time her college choir was going be filmed for TV. She and some friends got to one of the male choir members with some make-up. He was the only guy who didn't look pale.)

I did a little bit of backstage in my high school and middle school days and some in collage...and yes they have to wear that much make up to show up color on screen or lighten skin tone to not look so dark too.
