Description For ~chaoka for the beautiful sculpture she sendt me

You have no idea how much I struggeled with this. And when I was done I was quite proud of myself. But don't worry, soon I'll start to see all the flaws again.

I really, really love the lighting and the shadows casted in this pic. The colours are also excellent. One thing that I notice about this pic, as a bit of criticism, is that the creature seems sort of.. detached (?) from the tree/log/thing it's walking on. Almost like.. the creature is closer to the viewer than the tree/log/thing is, by a bit, making it look like it's not actually standing on the parts of the log it's supposed to be (particularly with the very back and very front legs). Does that make any sense? Another thing is that the way the wing connects to the shoulder doesn't really look right, at least to me.

But I love the little details you've tucked in there; the whiskers, and especially the hot breath on the cold air. But yes, this pic is very nicely done!

'Mu, I simply cannot see anything wrong with this piece. And therefore, cannot type out a critique. The lighting is perfect, and your attention/detail to anatomy improves with every picture you create. *faves*

Bye!

XP Kidding!
I love the sleek and well designed anatomy as well as the eyes. They seem to give a very soft expression.
The colours of the overall piece seem to flow together very nicely. I especially like the membranes of the wings. They are a beautiful mixture of hues and look almost rainbow with the light showing through. At the same time, I know they're green. A rather tricky bit of penache to pull off ^^
Also, love the fine detail of the short fur.

Perhaps my only critique would be that the red overtones on the fur and wood look a little strong, though they do give the picture a bit of a warmer feel.
I know blue can help make it look colder.
I've worked very little with shading white fur, so take that with a grain of salt. I have worked with it enough to know it's a pain though

As always, I love your sense of lighting! I feel that you've had some great art education experience or you're naturally observant. I also love the sort of pastel-like texture you've given this piece. It's thick, bold, but still delicate and intricate. Beautiful colors! Wonderful skill for anatomy as well!

I learn by seeing, I fav so I can see it over and over again.

The ammount of detail, where you put it and where it was left out. Where you have your shadows lie and how deep they are. Contrasting colors, and shape.

I think the legs look kind of unfinished, they could maybe use some more fur detail, but I'm being extremely nitpicky here because otherwise it's awesome. Love the design and color choices, it's a very interesting creature.

Well, I really love it Kal. It kinda looks look watercolours the way you painted it. It's all very 'shapey' if you know what I mean. It's really very pretty. Lighting and shading both look great.

I'd be proud, too! I love the lighting and pose. The wings remind of a luna moth...

However, one thing about the anatomy bugs me: the wings and forearms are attatched... I know that a lot of artists do it that way, but, personally, I'm not fond of it. If the forearms and wings were connected, then their motions would be... awkward, for lack of better terms. It's hard to come up with anatomy for six-limbed vertebrates, though, because nature hasn't made one yet.
Again, though, this is just my personal opinion. I'm not flaming, or even ranting!
I just wanted to give you an honest critique, like you said you wanted.

One can't like everything and I realize such anatomy would be pretty impossible.
I was going for the wing-out-of-back style, but it didn't look too good. Then I put the wingjoints right beside the shoulders, then I just jointed the wings and shoulders. I don't think I'll ever figure out how to do wings properly xD lol

Lol I've tried to figure out how the skeletal and muscular structures would work and ended up with a headache...
I think it's a problem all artists have. Balancing anatomy with what looks good...

The shading is wonderful, it's soft and well-blended. I love the way the pose is done the muscles are defined without making it look gruesome or anything.

Ugh, sorry for the horrible comment. It's four in the morning and I need sleep but it won't come... |D;;

You have an incredible right to be proud!
The first thing that caught my eye was the brilliant swirls of the tree branch. Then the gorgeous blend of color on the wing. Then to the amazing lighting, especially on the neck and head. Then to the prettty sky. So amazing!

Wow...very impressive. Concrite? Here I go!

Overally your anatomy is very good. However, I think you need to draw feet a bit bigger. They look a bit too dainty, especially on the hind legs.

As always your colors are amazing. But I think the snow should be whiter and more defined. I see you put some texture in it, but I'd say go further. Make a custom brush (or a couple) that isn't compelety round and smooth, and first put some snow with bigger flakes that's at a higher opacity. Have some of it ovelap the critter, but not too much. Then plop down a bunch of it behind the critter with smaller flakes and a lower opacity. It looks like you've already done that, but compared to all the work you've done on the critter, I can't help but feel it looks rushed.

Why? Because it's almost perfect in all ways - you managed to capture chaoka's char in all her elegance and beauty. The coloring - that's where I truly must bow low *__* amazing skill....
And of course, what pictures often lack - mood. Wonderful... I can almost smell that fresh winter air. Don't know why, but to me it feels like it's the dawn or early winter evening - time when I myself feel really comfy and peaceful, especially if it's not too cold and it's snowing.
Comfy mood! ))

Your sense of colour, lady, deserves a prize All of the colours in this piece complement each other. I think one of the most important things is the fact that you shade with different colours that don't generally reflect a lower shade of the base colour. I've always wanted to learn how to do that properly because it's not a skill that's easy to do without messing up
It's no wonder you're proud! Brilliant work, keep it up

This one I REALLY like! Reminds me of a big candy cane. With butterfly dragon wingses ^w^. I really like the blue shades in the shading, that really caught my eye. The tree also totally rocks za house, but the snow on the bottom branches is a little blah. Other than that, this is love on a stick -<3-

That is just glorious. The fact that there is no lineart makes me extremely happy, since that is something that takes a lot of time to work out perfectly, and I've always had to force myself to do that with my pictures. The anatomy is wonderful, with the limbs resting so delicately againt the tree, as well as the creature's face, which seems to communicate an odd, devil-may-care expression. Not malicious, but not completrly heavenly. The style of the brushwork on the creature is soft and hazy, fitting with the overall mood of the piece, and I like how it contrasts with the bark of the tree, which has little curling tendrils. They balance out the creature very well, as well. I love the composition, and the frame finishes the image off very well.

I really can't find anything wrong with it, but maybe I'm just overwhelmed.

You're artwork is to DIE for... The anatomy is perfect, and I love how you mix different colors to create colorful shading...

How do you do that painted effect?!? I'm crazy for it. @0@

Though, one thing that's bothering me is the snow in closeup. It looks like a moon, so try elongating it to look like it blowing with speed. But everything else is perfect in it's own way! I'm definately faving this!

Do you have a tablet? Propably. I have an 6x4 Intuos2 and an A4 intuos3 wacom tablet. I used my old, tiny i2 on this. Mainly because the other one is far to big to fit in the bed with me and my pooter xD lol. Anyway. Intuos tablets have some crazy pressure sensetivity, I love it to bits!

I think I'll do something with that snowflake thingy, maybe remove it completly or add some texture/speed to it

It's smooth, and I haven't compared it to other tablets, so I don'tknow the pressure sensitivity, but I can tell you it's sensitive. I was wondering... what the options for the brush you used? I'm not going to use it, because I use OC 3.5, And it gives me a painted effect.

Oh.. lol xDD
