Description

Yay! I'm home! That means I can use all my materials again I've had charcoals for a long time, I just had no idea how to use them...and I still don't hah. This is my first time using charcoals. I sketched out the base and shaded it in with charcoal. Sooo, I have no idea if I did this right, or if there's even a right way. But I just rubbed charcoal on another piece of paper, took a small paintbrush and then kinda "painted" it with charcoal. I didn't get it wet at all and this isn't watercolor. It's not bad for a first time and in 2 hrs total...but I'd like to learn and practice more. If anyone has any tips or tricks with charcoal please let me know! Thanks!

Do you have a kneaded Eraser those are really useful for blending. If you get a chamois cloth is great for smoothing the charcoal. All of which dont get it wet. You can use charcoal on any paper but the one i find the best is Newsprint. Being for never really using it you did a really good job. The only thing I see you can do is go darker but other than that Great Job!

Ya know my charcoal kit came with a kneaded eraser but it's so old it wont knead anymore. I looked up how to revive it they said warm it with your hands for a while but it just turned sticky and is beyond repair. I need to get myself another one! For smoothing I used tissue but I do think cloth would be much better. Ah! Thank you for recommending a type of paper, that's always the hardest part in my opinion! Haha yeah I couldn't do very fine dark lines because I lost my charcoal sharpener. Thank you so much! Time to update the shopping list

Oh yeah that kneaded eraser is done for. Utrecht is a great place to get some art supplies. Your lines were fine what i was trying to say was a darker tone over the whole thing. I dont have A level college work but i do have some b's like these . Another great paper to work on is Toned paper, it may need groves i have look at my paper again, you will have to get some white charcoal with that. Here is a B level work of that . Oh vine charcoal is best for getting your guidelines down without making dark marks, they are so easy to erase or smooth out unless you stab the paper , and large charcoal sticks are great for large dark areas. What came in your kit to sharpen your charcoal?, I use an exacto knife and sandpaper, its a challenge to sharpen those pencils that way but its worth it in the end. I hope this was helpful for you and I wish you the best on your exploration of charcoal I can't wait to see!

Ah I see. The sharpener looked just like a small normal pencil sharpener but it said it was for charcoal only.  That's a wonderful idea! I would have never thought of an exacto knife and sandpaper! I'll certainly have to give that a try! Thank you so much!
