Wow, awesome. Beetles are like, one of my favorite things, I keep live exotic ones in a vivarium in my kitchen.

Ah cool!- I'd love to get some large beetles of my own, but their adult lives are so short, I'd just get upset :<

My pachnoda beetles are coming up on being one year old soon, although they're only supposed to live to be about half that. >__>;;
And my hissing cockroaches will live to see their third year.
But most of my bugs DO live very short lives, my crickets only lasted a few weeks, but they left behind teeny tiny little babies that just showed their miniscule faces yesterday. Breeding them and seeing the next generation is really rewarding, especially when it's a rare/hard to breed variety :0
-Rubs hands like a fly- Also they're creepy.

I had to make it a rainbow, it's a unicorn! (pure white was boring)
Honestly- I wish I could draw the iridescent colours of REAL beetles and insects. They're so shiney and pretty

I know, especially scarabs. I think it would work better if the creature was black with some rainbow parts so it would look more iridescent, but this looks more fantastical.

Yeah maybe- I think I'd need to do a proper life study of something like that, figure out how iridescence works- before applying it so something made up :y

Do you use reference images? I have a feeling those would come in handy for something tricky like this.

Nope- not for the colours. After 2+hours doing the sketch a lineart, I just slapped a very quick gradient on for colour. Didn't really have the patience to do it properly :v
