Zero is the most recurring support character in the main Mega Man story, first appearing in Mega Man X and returned for all sequels as well as his own series, Mega Man Zero, and again in Mega Man ZX.

Zero is Dr. Wily's final creation, created specifically to destroy Mega Man and to replace Bass. Unlike his predecessor, Zero would indeed be able to carry out this task as he was the most powerful machine at the time, though it is unknown he did carry out such a task. Nonetheless, Zero would be responsible for the massive tragedy that became the focal point of the entire X series. Sometime before the first X game, Zero began attacking Reploids until the then Maverick Hunter leader, Sigma, narrowly managed to subdue him. However, his defeat lead to the accidental infection of Sigma as Zero carried a powerful ailment known as the Zero Virus, which soon turned into the Sigma Virus, which Zero felt he needed hold responsible for. Zero's most vauled and closest ally is Mega Man X, who ironically, is Dr. Light's final creation as well as the template for Reploids

Unlike his friend X, Zero does not gain the weapons of his fallen foes, but instead, learns techniques called EX-Skills, which mimics a specific move used by that boss and the majority of them are used by his favorite weapon, the Z-Saber, a lightsaberish weapon.

Somewhere around after the X series had ended, Zero had adapted to using a new, less destructive body, which he dons in the Zero series, though in the third game, he has to confront his original body, possessed by an equally powerful Reploid named Omega. Zero's final battle is in Mega Man Zero 4 where he sacrifices his very life to kill Weil, an insane human who tried to destroy all life on Earth, ultimately redeeming himself from the plague he had unwittingly unleashed.

Zero's essence is held within a Biometal called Model Z in Mega Man ZX. It is initially wielded by Giro, who bears a striking resemblance to Zero, due to his long blond hair and red clothing. He is killed early in the game, and before turning into a Cyber Elf, he hands Model Z over to his friends, Vent and Aile in order to become the fusion of ZX by Double Megamerging with their Model X, created from the essence of Mega Man X
