Roy Mustang looked up as the raindrops suddenly ceased falling onto his hair. Lieutenant Hawkeye knelt beside him, a black umbrella in her left hand. βYou should be more careful, sir,β she told him. βYouβre useless all wetββ-he flinchedβ-βand someone could attack you.β Or you could catch cold, she added silently.
His gloved right hand covered hers on the handle of the umbrella. Why was he wearing his ignition gloves? His onyx eyes met her cinnamon-coloured ones, and he gave her a terse smile. βWhoβd want to attack me while youβre protecting me?β he asked.
Her left eyebrow rose. Plenty of people, the look said. His smile grew rueful, and his hand dropped into his lap.
βI know,β he murmured. βScar, and Homunculi, and others, Iβm sure.β
They were still in uniform, still at Headquartersβ-she could not break protocol, no matter how much she wanted to throw her arms around him, no matter how much she wanted to kiss him and tell him that theyβd get through it together, no matter what. Instead she settled for giving him an eye signal that said that, along with one of her rare smiles.
He blinked at her, then smiled backβ-a wide, genuine smile. His hand found hers and squeezed. βWould you like to have lunch with me, Lieutenant?β he asked.
βCertainly, sir,β she replied promptly. He took the umbrella from her and helped her up in a rare show of chivalry. She thanked him politely.
As they walked back inside, they shared an eye signal that each understood and treasured.
