You know, you could do the original 151 plus the six new starters (Chikorita, Cyndaquil, Totodile, Treecko, Torchic, and Mudkip) That way, you'll do only... *thinks*... 151 plus 6(mulitplied by 3)... that would make... 169 Pokemon. Not bad compared to 356, huh?

I contest that the most fun part of that game was giving the creatures twisted names. My personal coup de grace was my Machamp, 'Angel Marie'. And my Chikoritas are always named 'Vegipuppy'.
