Description I'm not so happy with the anatomy here. Obviously it was never intended to be perfectly human, but I'm not sure that I really got the moth/human anatomy mix thing working. Oh, and please ignore the hands for now. I know they look ridiculous but they aren't finished, and I can't work on them anymore until the paint is dry. I didn't want to wait for the hands to be finished to upload the painting, though. Anyway...

When I first started out with this one, I had intended for it to be along the same lines as Cabbage Faery. It was going to just be the figure in shades of brown and white, emerging from a mist. But, I decided I wanted to mix a big splodge of red to the mist, on the right. Then I thought to add some vague leaf shapes to that red area. That turned into more leaves, then the face appeared, more leaves came...

The face... He is someone I was supposed to have drawn a couple of weeks ago, but I started painting this instead. He didn't like that, and so decided to make an appearance here, albeit a small one.

I am fascinated by moths and butterflies. They are very beautiful and graceful looking, but there's something strangely mad and chaotic about the way they fly. They flit about, in and out of sight, leading you all over the place, and it's hard to keep track of them even if you are following closely. Occasionally they will land for a few moments, flash their wings and be off again. I like that.

The top wings are modelled on the female gypsy moth, and the underneath layer is from the male.

Very pretty. I totally understand your fascination for moth. Since childohood they always captivated me, and filled me with both amazement and sadness.
Anyway, well done on this one

Very pretty. Are you familiar with the artist Brian Froud? This really reminds me of some of his work.

It really seems you have captured the essence of a moth in this fairy. Do you sell prints anywhere?

Your work is just amazing. Her wings are so gently done as if giving rest from the breeze that brings her alight gently on our shoulders, whispering secrets.

Simply Beautiful.

Blessed Be

"Fly away, pretty moth, to the shade
Of the leaf where you slumbered all day;
Be content with the moon and the stars, pretty moth,
And make use of your wings while you may. . . .
But tho' dreams of delight may have dazzled you quite,
They at last found it dangerous play;
Many things in this world that look bright, pretty moth,
Only dazzle to lead us astray." ~ Thomas Haynes Bayly

A treasure!

wow as soon as I saw this I thought - she embodies the moth energy. maybe you are being a typical self critical artist ( I can relate) about the anatomy not being perfect. I dont see anything wrong with it myself.

I truly love this..

We just had a moth plague in Sydney about a month ago, they were everywhere in the city and in my flat.

10+++++ frome me.

I think you're probably right because I can look at it now, months later, and feel pleased with it instead of nit-picking every single little detail

A moth plague?! I love moths but that would be too much even for me. I found a particularly beautiful pink and green moth in the house a short while ago. My family don't like them but I sat there taking photos

Thank you

Yeah the moth plague was a bit scary, but luckily as it was reported on the news it was only to last one week.
And it seemed to be concentrated in the CBD of Sydney in certain spots, as I live near the city I have a few in my lounge room, but I worked out that if I turned of the main light and just had the lampshade on they werent as attracted to my window (which makes sense)

The anatomy looks great, its off in a characteristic sort of way but it really helps create the moth fairy's perfection. A beautiful piece.

I love butterflies and moths too. I also like dragonflies and ladybugs. Butterflies are beautiful, one of the most fascinating of God's creatures. I draw fairies with real butterfly wings, sometimes I make up the wings. I love this lovely, albino moth lady, I think she is lovely, I like her hair and wings, the white against the rich tones of the red and green leaves is good contrast.

I read that you are unhappy with the anatomy being of but I think it does a good job kind of depicting the difference in this character from humanity. she is not human so why must she look like one. I think it is great.

Awesome! I was thinking about doing a moth faery type picture myself... Right now I'm working on a Feary Queen picture and It's kicking my butt! Do I sense a bit of Brian Froud in this one? Excellent work my dear!

Thank you. I would love to see what you come up with if you do go with the moth theme.

Froud has definitely been an influence with this piece, though I don't purposely try to emulate his work (how could I??!!).

It's in the eyes I think... Not to imply you emulate him at all, just a sprig of influence... I think he would be wowed by your work! I want to show one of my friends your work but he's in England right now working on a movie (Stardust by Neil Gaiman and Charles Vess) My friend/mentor/master at times being Charles Vess... He's good friends with ole Froud... You should check out some of Charles' Paintings - [link]

And I probably will do me a moth faery... It'll be fun!
