i find it hard to make them look some what transluent with all the dark layers

I tweaked the opacity of the base color layer until it looked right and then set the shading and details to clipping groups.
Best advice I can give you is to find some real-life material that has the translucence you're looking for and just observe it; hold it up to the light, try to see how it plays with it. Hold it in front of other things at different distances, see how clear or blurry the image looks through the material.
