Story time:

The amphibian creatures have lived under the soil for eons; born, hatched, and matured in the perfect conditions.
As they age and become too large for their original burrows they unleash a clutch of their own eggs and travel up to the surface.
Once upon time they would stay and die in the earth, but this human family has given them reason to emerge.

As the creatures calcify in the sun, transformed into empty statues, the little girl sets out food and drink for them. A ritual that her family has done for generations.
The amphibian creatures spend their last moments in comfort and happiness.
As they die their eyes crystallize over; reflecting the world and the kindness they knew for only a moment.

Ya know, I truly loath stories of humans being the greatest destructive force when it comes to animals and nature. We are the only species that actual sits back and considers our actions and the effects on the world. We are also the only ones who now try to save extinct species and regrow forests.
Just saying

I know this is suppose to be sweet and moving and all.....yet for some reason I'm finding it a little creepy and disturbing.

Hehe, i can see why, but you know a lot of kid's fairy tales are often more creepy than sweet

Oh, I DO know; My final paper in my sophmore year of hs was about the censoring and editing of classic fairytales and how the stories are ruined and destroyed by doing so.

I agree with you.
It is so odd to have those stories edited for kids when they were told and designed to be read by kids. That dumbing-down and hyper-sensitivity is very annoying. They even banned/censored classics like "Huckleberry Finn" and "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" because of the "controversial" or "scary" content.

We are also the ones responsible for the extinction of many species and the deforestation, but all the same, you're right. Not ALL of us are bad This is a really nice story and rendering. Somewhat sad but it does bring a sense of warmth as well.

Oh yes, unfortunately that is true, which is why i said 'now'. Over the years most of us have learned to do better for the planet....but there are always some people who just don't care about nature. (there is a recent problem in my hometown of a company not properly disposing tons of dangerous chemicals, it is a dangerous situation).
We just have to wait for the scales to tip more towards people who want to live in balance with the planet.

And thank you

Tell me about it I even brought a recycling bin into work, take the recycling myself so no one has to worry about it, put it right next to the trash can, yet people still throw plastic bottles and cans in the trashcan. Grrr...
