I had wanted for a while to create a character who was balding as a feature of his design and looked cooler because of it, so when I came up with the idea of a samurai with koi coloring running up his scalp and down his back, I knew I had something. The "chonmage" hairstyle is accurate, but I took the minor liberty of leaving it partially unbound in back, mostly to keep the portrait looking balanced.
