Description Here in the Appalachian Mountains we have little cold snaps after spring arrives that we call "winters". The first one arrives as the red bud trees blooms, so it is called red bud winter. After the dogwoods bloom, we have dogwood winter. The last little "winter" will be blackberry winter in May. It can get confusing to people who are not from around here. I knew a woman years ago named Maybell, who said, "If you don't know which winter it is just call it possum winter."
