Description So I noticed a while back that while there are tons of size charts for Pern's dragons, there aren't any whatsoever for the watch-whers. Which, while understandable considering they only get one book, is still kinda unfair to the ugly brutes. Because they're just so adorable, IMO.

The description for the watch-whers is kinda vague (really ugly, cousins of dragons, horse sized, tiny wings and photophobic), so I did my best. Since the DLG says they're roughly the size of a horse, I put the gold a few hands shorter than a Draft Horse and the Green about the height of a pony. Also, Dragon's Kin states that whers *can* fly, but only at night, so while I made their wings small, they're still large enough to grant limited flight capabilities.

Anyway, I hope this comes in handy for people!

I am dying to have your whers. Do you have them at a Weyr somewhere? Or are you willing to give a template?

I'm curious. From nose to tail tip how long are they? Also, can I please use this image for my Pern groups? Whers are a big deal, but wher descriptions are very vague in the books.

Length... I think would maybe be their shoulder height x about 3.5. So if the gold Wher is about 6 ft tall, then she'd be about 18-23 feet long. Or something like that.

You can use the image if you want, though I'm afraid I don't have a copy that's watermark free or of a higher resolution at the moment.

That's fine...we're just looking for a size reference mostly. If you're able to find one without the watermark, just send it to: phoenixtears28@gmail.com

Imo, Pern is not Pern without these guys... they belong there along with the dragons & fire lizards... and that is an awesome chart!

I really like your wher design, and a great job on the sizes as well I think. The gold isn't enormous and the green isn't super itty bitty. I tried to make my own design take on the whers, since they have a rather vague description, but I think yours blows mine completely out of the water. Very nicely done, and I like the anatomy of their muscles as well as their stocky appearance. I could stare at these whers for hours.

Given that in All the Weyrs of Pern McCaffery more or less indicated that the dragon's flight ability was actually based on telekinetic and not on any actual principles of areodynamics, you could probably get away with even smaller wings, but I do love your artwork.

Actually, I think it was more a combination of both. I remember reading somewhere that Kitti Ping had designed the dragons with wings slightly smaller than they should be to remove the problem of dragons having ridiculously massive wingspans. The tk was compensating for the slightly smaller wings, but was not solely what gave the dragons their ability to fly. Aerodynamics still has a role in their flight because it if was just telekinesis, then the dragons wouldn't need wings at all. As for the Whers, in Dragon's Kin I believe it mentions that the whers can fly only at night because the air is heavier (or lighter, can't remember which), which means their wingspan doesn't need to be as big as what the dragons have, but they still need to be big enough to get the lift from the thermals. The telekinesis is more for weight factors. If the dragon thinks it can carry something, then it can. That's largely why they were able to move the engines from the Bahrain and the Buenos Aires onto the Red Star.

Other than that, though, I'm glad you like it!

;U; this is fantastic! I adore whers too, and always bemoan the lack of art for them. I love how you've managed to portray a distinct size difference between the colours without making your Green a shrimp.
