I like this kind of photo, but itΒ΄s very difficult to focus both the mirror image and the subject behind it!

How did you get both the guard and monks in focus?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

jrockar In reply to JoshSmithArt [2015-11-21 13:00:43 +0000 UTC]

I think the guard is not quite in focus. I usually use f/5.6, so DOF is not that shallow. But definitely only the reflection in the mirror is sharp... As sharp as a reflection in a mirror could be..

there's something not quite right with the focus in this... having focused on the monks, who are some 10 metres away, the focus is on over 10 metres - you would've just about get everything into infinity sharp, yet the street is blurred....

I see your thinking... Camera focuses to the plane of the mirror as it was a picture... Not the distance camera-mirror-monks, but just camera-mirror, therefore the letters is bottom left are coming to focus rather than the street in background...

noperson In reply to jrockar [2015-11-25 20:20:07 +0000 UTC]

if the camera focuses onΒ  the plane of the mirror, the edge of the mirror would be in focus as well, wouldn't it? but actually when you take a photo of a reflection the camera should focus on the 'camera-mirror-monks' distance. pure physics. i'm not convinced by your explanation. in fact i think this is not a genuine photo.

thanks, bro... for your trust.
Not sure now, I would have thought of the same as you said, camera in mirror focuses as camera-mirror,subject distance, but looking at the shot I could only came up with that explanation, as the letters in bottom left seem to come in focus. But you have a point with the rim of the mirror in that case. Only other thing I can think of that is a parabolic mirror and in magnifies the image??? No idea...
I'm not Reuters, I shot RAWs if you want to see it..

and i'm not world press photo, not interested in raws; but the convex mirror would very much explain that. is that what it was?

Perhaps we got off with a wrong foot then...
All I do is take photos when I like what I see. I'm not a digital artist, never was.

I find DOF with digital cameras to be something of a mystery. Often if shooting two or more people, only one of them is really sharp, even with a wide-angle lens and small aperture.
Mastering DOF was never a problem when I shot with film...

This is still a remarkable shot... well done!

jrockar In reply to NanoNightOwl [2015-12-15 13:14:45 +0000 UTC]

DOF, I think is a spherical array, so it depends on the position of people, whether they are the same distance from the sensor. Sharpness is definitely more apparent with digital cameras. But that's all technical voodoo..

i'm neither angry nor offended, no wrong foot here i like your photographs, byut this one here puzzled me as i assumed the mirror to be flat... my bad. i'm sorry
