Excellent work! I really appreciate the warm colors, and the fog that goes well with the soil being damp enough to take that crisp a paw-print.

And unlike your previous critique writer, I'd say the elf's eyes are at the correct angle to his other features; it's only his camo lines that break up the horizontal (which is what they're for, after all).

But I agree that the wolf's pose is off. The upper shoulders--the highest part of its body here--are facing toward us, but the legs are attached to its body at an angle that says it's still moving toward our left. And since the shoulders and the legs are, y'know, kinda connected, they probably oughtta match. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/w/w… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Wink)"/>

And the wolf is off balance, because too much of its weight is on the side of its raised paw--the wolf would fall over like an unbalanced load on a tripod, unless it had already shifted the angle of its upper body to balance more weight on the other legs. Does that make sense?

Other than that, my only crits are, hmm, contextual rather than artistic. The wolf's fur is both white and heavily fluffed-out, which are winter traits--very rare below the arctic circle except during wintertime. However, white wolves are certainly a fantasy staple and I haven't been bothered by them before, and that means you've sold me completely on the realism of your setting. And that is damned good work.

The elf's pose and clothing? Love them utterly without a single crit. The only things that nag at me are his haircut and face camo, and for completely trivial reasons:

Despite a few specific Native American tribes, very few peoples are going to shave that much of their scalps when the weather's cold enough for that thick padded clothing. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/w/w… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Wink)"/>

And camo paint implies a level of caution that doesn't quite go with gleaming metal rings and a pale well-defined line of hair. (Or, for that matter, not dyeing your wolf something a little less conspicuous. If you could get it to stand still for it, that is.)

So.

You might not know it from all these negatives, but except for the wolf's pose, what I'm saying is that this is so damned good that I can only compare it to real life, and even then I'm only finding really trivial things to question. You know how rare that is?

One hell of a good painting!

Wow, where to even begin? I'm all for constructive criticism, but I'm having a tough go finding anything I would change outside of getting nit picky. The only couple suggests I have are minor details. The shape and perspective of the wolf towards the back seems off somehow, as though it's too long. The only other detail is the way the eyes on the elf are rendered, they also seem skewed somehow when compared with the angle of the head and hair.

Outside of that, you have so much that's well done in the piece. You have a warm pallet which is very interesting to me because it creates a tension in the piece. The direct stare of the wolf, and the armor and style of the hunter would imply or be more inclined towards cooler colors because they are more associated with the emotions of wolves, elves, and the intensity that is created when the scene as a whole is viewed. By utilizing these warmer colors, it causes a push and pull because although the characters imply one mood, the warm colors and the beautiful forest and scenic landscape really better imply a calm, focused, almost routine morning habit.

The entrance point for me is definitely those eyes on the wolf, they truly stand out against the rest of the piece, but also because the wolf's form is a mass of white with warm tones against and otherwise earthy scene. The interplay between the wolf, hunter, and the length of the bow create this triangle effect which leads the eye finally to the imprint in the ground and then brings the eye back around the piece. It's a wonderful balance. You have enough details where they should be, but they're not overwhelming and they greatly aid in the story-telling. The trees and the supporting foliage also create a frame for the "triangle," and establish a solid foreground, adding depth.

Over all, this piece is beautiful and has a great unity to it. You should be very proud!
