Oh God, is it wrong that I'm in love with the way you drew this? I didn't even know who this character was until now (I haven't watched much of XS if you couldn't tell), but you've made me want to learn more about this dude. I especially love the shading on his face, and hell I just love his face in general! His expression is subtle and charming. <3

There is a free trial. I decided to buy it because I really love how you can control the brush strokes and it was only $50. It's also compatible with photoshop!

Gimp brushes' extension names are .vbr and .gbr.

hmm... well no I don't see those extensions. But I know you can download sai brushes or maybe you could convert your gimp brushes to be compatible with sai somehow. I never really looked into it because I use photoshop for my special effect brushes, toning, and such. Sai I just use for coloring. Still, I'd give the program a chance! You never know! And don't think that you need special brushes to make something great! Sai has 4 different brushes and most of the time I just use the simple round brush and tweak the blending.

Ok sure, but you asked for my critique so please don't hate me for giving it. Believe me I don't want to offend. I've been asked to give my opinions on art before and some people didn't take the advice constructively, but personally. Please, understand I am not "Bashing" your art.
First off, I'd like to say this has a nice angle and composition. You did very well for your first attempt. Now about the brushes... it looks like you used simple brushes to paint. Your lineart looks like it could have been drawn with a textured brush to give more of a "pencil lead" feel. My advice is use a small, round brush with no feather around the edges. People want clean, crips lines. Believe me, I've been to art school and know plenty of artists, art appreciators, and commissioners.
It looks like you used a feathered brush for the shading. It leaves a nice effect as long as you use it along the edges of your drawing, which you did. This approach reminds me of the sonic official art and how it has that soft feel. If that's the style you're going for stick with it! Everyone has there own idea of how they want a piece of art to look so you don't think you have to change! The only thing I would suggested is to use more contrasting colors to shade with. Your colors are too close in shade and bleed into each other. You can look at *annria2002 work and how contrasting her colors are if you are unsure.

I think I must tell you, that image wasn't drawed with a tablet. That's a lineart on paper (drawed with stabilo black pen

I haven't ever worked with gimp, perhaps I should give it a try and see if I can't figure something out for you!
