Description Edit: Eyes tutorial, featuring this same character, is up: [link]

A sister tutorial to the last Cleaning up Lines Tutorial [link] I really appreciated the feedback that I got, so thank all of you, and I'm glad it was helpful to some.

A lot of people mentioned that it's hard for them to sketch cleanly, so the last tutorial didn't really apply. I have the same problem, and it takes a looooot of extra work on paper (erase, erase, draw, erase) to get pencil lines clean enough to start coloring off of. So.... that's why I often turn to Digital Inking!

Here are some of the ways that I do Digital Inking. I know the "trace directly over the original image" is probably the most common method, but it's hard to do without a tablet and also hard for people with unsteady hands, so that's why I talked a bit about other methods.

As usual, comments/feedback appreciated so I can incorporate them into future projects. Thanks and to all of you!

You prolly have photoshop elements. I use to have elements and it's like a watered down version of photoshop; it lacks a bunch of stuff including the pentool.

No worries, I'm happy to help. If you want the pen tool then you need to obtain a copy of any CS photoshop. I have CS6. I suggest looking on youtube if you are feeling...nonpayful, if you catch my drift >.>

Thank you for both of them, their great and very useful, I always have problem with inking, I like to ink by hand because digitally its a pain. My problem is that after i ink, i try to erase the rest of the pencil marks and the ink end up getting ligher from the eraser. :\ I even wait til its done drying and it still does that. Its frustrating. Im gonna try what you've shown me and hopefully I might get a better result.

if you use portable SAI (the free version of Paint tool SAI [link] ) it's a thing called smoothing that makes your line go slower and you get lots of time to decide where it's gonna go, it sadly only works with a tablet but it's the best thing ever happened to me (i have a very shaky hand) and it's really easy c: it's different numbers, like 1 - 15 is to make your line less shaky, and S-1 to S-7 makes it go slower. super easy and it does not take as long time as with vectors c: the program also has a vector layer with the same features as flash and you can make curved lines (not the same way as photoshop) there too ^^ a really good program to make lineart and color in c:

joulee, the bit about the paths in Photoshop helps quite a bit.

I usually wind up 'inking' my art in Macromedia Freehand MX (Like Illustrator), because 'inking' in PS is just aggravating and tedious.

Thanks!

I've tried this method on gimp, but the stroke path tool isn't really working with me, I tried emulate brush strokes, but it doesn't look anything like in the tutorial

I tried the ink tool with simulated pressure. It's the best I can get. Maybe you should try that out once.
