Description Hey gang,

So a friend of mine is getting married and they wanted me to come up with a custom design for their guestbook. After a ton of trial and error this is what the end result ended up being. We went threw a ton of color options, but in the end they liked a slightly more plain approach. I think it turned out great and would love to know what you all think!

Thanks a ton,

-Josh

I'm gonna critique this from an artist point of view first. At first glance it's cute and the story is clear, but if you look at it more closely you start to see a lot of flaws. What program did you use for this? You normally have a nice loose, and active style but this is just so stiff and rigid. Even though this was for a "client" you should always do what you do best. For example look at the brides hand, it in this case her flipper; what happened? I know you can draw hands I've seen it, so what were you using that made you forget? Also, a bride wouldn't normally wear such a bold nail color like red with her white wedding dress, that's part of the research phase that I think you missed. Also where are her legs and what is she sitting on? She's not on the seat properly and her legs are virtually not there. Don't forget to draw through your forms, even if you're using a computer program. For the guy he just looks, ok, but where is his other arm? Is it that black shape behind his other one? Again draw through your forms so you have proper placement. Next, you made the effort of making the traditional dragging the cans behind couple, but then you covered them by the tree leaves. If you're going to put in the effort of including the cans make sure you can see them, other wise what's the point? The composition is fine and the overall feel is there, what I'm doing is knit-picking the small artistic things. Of course the number one thing is that the client is happy and if this is what they wanted then you did your job. Hope that helps!

Thank you very much for taking the time to write all this out. I agree the hands could of been WAY better, to be honest I don't even know what happened. I hate to say laziness, but it might of been, she had me do some major changes the day it was due so it kinda put me in a crunch. She gave the exact colors shades for the nails and all the clothes, so I couldn't do anything about that. I even had shadow and some other effects, but she didn't want any of it, and originally she only want the characters with the bike and cans, then last minute asked for the tree. Once I put it in she asked me to put the can behind, and her reasoning is the leaves are what people are going to be signing at the wedding.

I really thank you a ton for taking the time out, and for giving honest feedback! Means a lot!

Thank you very much!

Ah yes we've all been there; the client asking for things they think is a good idea and us having to just go with it. I knew you could do better if it was just you, so forget what I said haha I did a picture for my own wedding but luckily because I was the client I got to draw it the way I wanted. Actually my wife is acting as my commission manager at the moment. She helps with the clients and also helps me with making each pic look good for them. But yeah don't worry, we all deal with clients like that at least once in our careers, so welcome to the club haha

Oh sweet! I may need to get my girl on the commission manager job. I would love someone to do that for me! Thanks again for stopping by and leaving a message. I do appreciate honest feedback!

I really enjoyed the overall “theme” of the art. My first thought was this would make a great card! It is a toned down look with great detail and clean colors. I could envision a “series” of these…fall colors, Holiday Tree, New House! The card exudes fun and I feel like I would enjoy these people “riding” off to a new life. Coloring is good. The lines could be a bit darker in spots….mainly the on the brides gown and veil….I think you wanted it appear “soft and white”…I find I have to strain a bit to see the full extent of the lines. I think you could have gotten away with a silver (if printed)…maybe even black. My thought process being “the bride is always the center of attention”. The lines are clean and I like the attention to detail with the “little things” like the fingernail polish and her mole. Overall, knowing your goal….this is a wonderful piece I think your friends will cherish for a long time. It is a gift that will connect you to their special day for years to come. Very enjoyable!

Thank you very much! I agree the dress is a bit too light. I added in some shading but she liked it without, so this is the way it ended up. I would these to turn into cards! Even her thank you cards after the wedding! I really appreciate the time you took to write all this out, and I am very glad you enjoy it. Thank you very much!

Not a problem.  It was enjoyable.  And yes a version of this should be their card for everything...especially Thank You cards.  When/if time comes you can add a little buggie to the back for a child.  Great job!
