I think there's dodging of the subjects, so they appear lighter. Alternatively, the surroundings may have been darkened. While the same can be easily achieved in the darkroom (and is therefore not "bad" in my eyes), it distracts here from the main topic of the picture as it is very apparent. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice picture, but this is just what struck me

you know, i'm glad i read through the comments first. At first I thought.. 'school girls'.. surely not!? but as soon as you said oriental tourists.. (gotta be japanese) it made sense.. I came across some when i was in France. I was struck as to why they were all decked in uniform, but I guess it's the way they are!
