It's reall easy to keep the hat on, but sometimes not so easy.

Yep always losing the hat... whether due to a perilous - you fall you die - height, someone knocks you down, or you get into a fist fight battle.
One of the DLC outfits for Cole looks like the one he's wearing in the fourth panel. I'm betting the partner in that frame is Rusty.
