It is like photoshop. When you add a layer, it is added onto the below layer. So you can add many layers of grass or snow or rock. You can also edit the distribution so that you can have it covering certain amounts of the layer, certain heights in the layer and only on certain angles.

Not bad for being new to it.
The water is really nice. Try adding multiple layers to add more detail to the terrain. Make the sky larger and make the clouds higher to make them more realistic. Try looking through some tutorials here at DA.
