The trick is blatant outright lying. Whenever people ask what you've been up to, say you're busy. If they invite you to something, say "oh gee, I don't know, I'm pretty busy". If they still ask for your help with something, say "I"ll have to see how things go, its all a bit hectic at this time of year!"

Eventually people will believe that you're busy and will stop trying to take up your free time, leaving you free for late-night drives to Hexham (about 30 minutes north of the city) for delicious thickshakes. Mmmm, thickshakes...
