Description ~Chapter 60- Chasing a Lost Hope

As soon as Dave had opened the door to the room he, Dain, Sam and Brad were sharing Dain pushed past him and immediately chose his bed without saying anything.
Dave scowled at Dain behind his back and chose his own bed. How could Dain have done that? How could he have just given up on his country like that? He must have known it was only an empty threat! As if Savi would kill his own flesh and blood!
But these thoughts, Dave decided, should not be expressed loudly. Dave had heard rumours and stories about things Dain had done to people who’d tried to argue with him or tease him or even bring up the subject of his family and he didn’t want to start anything he wasn’t certain he could win. So Dave kept his thoughts to himself for the time being and determined to wait until Dain would leave the room to visit one of the others, as he was sure Dain would wether it be Rosa who he just wouldn’t leave alone or Khai who was sure to already be getting the 21 questions, then Dave would at least let his thoughts loose on Sam.
Dain lay on the bed he had picked before anyone else and stared up at the ceiling. It reminded him of his old home. Of a time when he was younger and more carefree. When one of his greatest joys had been to stare up at his ceiling, which he usually did when he was stoned, and dream up a happy future he knew was hopeless.
But there was no happy future now. How could there be?
In the back of his mind Dain knew that as soon as Savi had the crown he’d do away with Dain and Khai and possibly even Xavier because wether or not they chose to be, they would always still be competition. So obviously he’d concluded that the sensible thing to do would be to enjoy his last days with his family and friends.
But Dain had never been one to be rational or sensible, so he decided to do exactly the opposite. Already a plan was forming in his mind of what he could do. What he could do to win the crown back and save his country.
Dain tried to sleep but his mind just wouldn’t let him. His plans were over running him and he felt a slight paranoia. He needed to check wether everyone was alright. But he knew who he really wanted to check on. The one person who’d been disturbing his thoughts for the past few days, the one person he couldn’t block out no matter how hard he tried.
He silently lifted himself out of bed and headed for the door making sure not to wake Brad but knowing that Sam and Dave were awake and just waiting for him to leave so they could talk.
Dain turned the door knob with a click then moved the door open just enough for him to get through without making it squeak and shut it behind himself.
Letting go of the door knob carefully Dain headed soundlessly in the direction of the girls room.
Dain had always been good at stealthing and he’d got a lot of practice when he was younger and even earlier in the year. When he would sneak out to get high or drunk or just to see one of his friends or girlfriends which normally resulted in him getting high or drunk anyway.
A few of Dain’s footsteps creaked on the wooden floor but he did his best not to make much sound and eventually made it to the door.
The door was already open so Dain pushed it softly and peered into the room.
The closest bed to him had Jane laying in it and the next had Fly and being the determined person he was Dain walked in wanting to check for himself.
Dain noticed that there were two empty beds in the room. He knew whose bed one would be but who else?
Dain left the room thinking to check the other one before getting frantic.
Before he’d even reached the door to the third room he heard talking coming from down stairs.
He recognised one of the voices as Rosa’s and then realised whose the second one was; Khai.
Dain crept closer to the top of the stair well and listened intently to the conversation.
“-just don’t get it”, he heard Rosa saying.
“Yeah, I can imagine how you feel” Khai said laughing at the end.
“I’m sick of this” Rosa said before Dain heard the sound of liquid being poured down a sink and decided that was his que to leave before getting caught.
Dain pretty much ran back to his room and almost caught Sam and Dave in conversation.
He lay back on his head and stared at the ceiling again.
Droplets of water beginning to form in his eyes. ‘Maybe I should be getting over her’ he thought to himself as he let the tears race down the sides of his face. ‘Maybe I’ve been chasing a lost hope this whole time’. ‘Maybe …she doesn’t love me anymore’, was Dain’s last thought before sleep finally accepted him and dreams took a hold of his thoughts.
