Description くるみ割り人形 (Kurumi Wari Ningyou) = The Nutcracker

Well my lady friends, here's a rare treat from me to you: a bishounen! And of course, no bishounen is complete without a rat king.

I realize that the nutcracker looks a lot more like a pirate than a soldier and that the rat king looks more like a musketeer than a seven-headed villain, but when you've grown your fingernails out as long as I have, everything is permissible.

Anyhow, I improved on the vector drawing technique I used in Setako and used radial gradients for the coloring, resulting in a much softer look (and a lot more lag on my computer). I've also applied the glowy effects from Steamstress (to my computer's grief) and for reasons beyond my understanding, another crow in the corner. I guess Princess Tutu was just too awesome.

Well, this took about maybe 10 hours to complete. It was exhausting, but I'm very pleased with the outcome. *rubs monitor* My apologies for the really huge dimensions - I like to sport the vectorness of it, but for some reason the filesize goes up 4x on dA when I set it to fullview at a smaller scale.

Rat king rules.

This is such an awesome interpretation of the characters! I love how the Rat King almost looks like a rogue hero instead of a villain.

I happened to be listening to "King Rat" by Modest Mouse when I looked at this image.

I know that it is different to a "Rat King", but that plus that other image you had of a real King Rat... Yeah, whatever.

Ah~ if you like Princess TuTu, you may be happy to hear this, (Or very disappointed, whichever suits your mood) my sister is making a Princess TuTu Nutcracker fanfic called "Eleventh Night". When she completes it, would you like to read it?

If you don't like fanfiction, I can completely understand.

I just watched a performance of The Nutcracker on stage. Now I crave artwork. Giving the Prince an eyepatch (complete with 割 embossed on it) like Drosselmeyer and Clara in a more contemporary dress is an interesting touch, and this has to be the most handsome, dashing rendition of Rat King ever. An excellent work.

The rat king DOES look like a musketeer!

As a dancer, I'd like to say that the positioning of the Nutcracker's left leg is crazy - he's practically doing a side split! Very few mn can do that... I've only met 2 that can do front-to-back splits, let alone to the sides...

As an artist, I'd like to say that THIS PIC ROCKS MY SOCKS!!! Definite fave! <3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JohnSu In reply to stargazer420 [2007-12-05 01:03:49 +0000 UTC]

Side split? I'd argue that he could go another 45 degrees before something tore. But I'm no dancer, so I suppose I'll take your word for it. What's the average man's limit, for future reference?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

stargazer420 In reply to JohnSu [2007-12-05 22:02:27 +0000 UTC]

Average man, or average male dancer? Ther's a difference, ya know. Average joe on the street is lucky if he gets past around 90, but an average male dancer can go a bit farther. I'm not sure of the exact numbers, but I think it would be about 130-150 degrees.

This is a legs-straight, back-straight, left-toe-to-right-toe-straight-line split, btw. With knees bent it's much easier.
