I was three weeks shy from my 15th Birthday. Sadly I remember only the confusion when I read on a newspaper about how Swedes thought that they had a nuclear leak and the same time the tv news told about Soviet disaster. And of course the fallout was already on our soil at that point.
What I do remember is the cleanup, this clip should start around 19 minutes when the liquidators do their shift. youtu.be/FfDa8tR25dk?t=1136 It seemed so crazy then and it's as crazy now.

That's weird, I just read about Chernobyl yesterday. A mini-series has just been released on this subject too. I don't think anyone really realized at the time. More than thirty years later, it is still incredible to see how much negligence has caused this disaster and how carelessly it has been treated.

Here where i live, about 200km from Chornobyl, people had no idea about the disaster too, for weaks... so called government hoped to have everything covered till the end
