Description Even though I do digital art almost exclusively, I have a habit of buying traditional art supplies and letting them sit for years untouched.

I decided that I was going to use a canvas no matter what and no matter how it ended up. This is on a 16" x 16" clear-acrylic primed linen canvas. I used my alkyd paints, one tube of which I had to pry open with my teeth (five years of sitting around will do that). I worked on this for about a half an hour, and I call it Hope.

This one just has to be unfinished... Hope's a very good title. the effectful use of light expresses it. Nice technique, though.

Thank you for the compliment, and thank you for looking! Not everyone looks at this piece, but it's a personal favorite of mine.

I have the same habit. I'll buy a ton of supplies that I really want to try, but when the mood hits, the first thing I reach for is my pencil...

Real paints scare me! I find that I'm working more on my fear than on the picture, but I have so many art supplies that I need to work through them. I think I have 15 of those pre-stretched canvases just looking at me from the corner of my room.

The bastards. They never stop staring, do they? It's worse when you've got something half started and have to stop for whatever reason. I tend to start with the eyes when i do a portrait so I'll have these fully formed eyes in the suggestion of a face following me around the room. Kinda creepy now that i think about it..

From what i see though, you don't have much to fear.

Yay for traditional art! When there is no "delete layer" command you feel a whole lot braver it seems Especially on a canvas, its so... substantial LOL Glad you got the urge to spread some paint around hun *hugs* I really like the profile of the face btw, did you model it on yourself? Or just from your mind?

The face is just from my head. The actual subject for me wasn't so much the face as it was the light -- sourceless but present even a dark situation.

I love the canvas! I got it on sale, and it's one of those 1 1/2" deep ones that you can hang without a frame, so I got pretty instant gratification.

I, for one, HOPE you do this (and share!) more often! Wystro, it's amazing to see "your style" transfer to this medium as well! It's absolutely intriguing...one of those paintings that can mean different things to different folks. Nice work!

I'll definitely put more traditional pieces up. Sometimes it feels like all of my art is gone when I power down my computer. At least this one piece gets to stay on my wall!

Thank you as always for your lovely comments, Aalyve!

Who knew! This is so neat hon The most I ever dabble in traditional art is when I get the crayons out with my kiddo, or the rare times we get the watercolors out and play around. There is something to be said for getting your hands into it more than just moving the mouse/stylus around

JohnKohlepp In reply to DesignsByEve [2007-11-26 01:48:08 +0000 UTC]

I'd have to agree with you!

On another note, I think I bristled at my room mate slightly -- when she saw me get all of the art supplies out she asked what made me get into painting! Of course in my mind I'm a painter even though I work in a digital medium; but to a lot of people, art isn't art unless it's on canvas.
