I used regular HB and 6B with some 8B for the really dark areas and also HB and 2B mechanical pencils...

This is my second attempt at this drawing and I'm still not totally happy with it but I feel that way about a lot a drawings. He is very difficult to capture like you said. He has a very distinctive look to him which makes it challenging for me. I'm glad you like it! Thanks for the feedback!

maybe you're not happy because the way you draw him is a bit "strict" (even if it's to look at details, if you know what I mean), but you managed to capture his face, and you've got a good technic (the way you draw), so go on... (sorry for my bad english)
