Interesting fact: while this statistic MAY have been true at one time, upon further research, I’ve found it might actually not have much bearing anymore. Regardless of the percentages changing, the statistic itself seems to somehow remain widely accepted due to unfortunate stereotypes.

All the same, Rain interpreting this as validating herself as a woman is kind of funny though. I mean, it’s a horrible way of looking at things on her part, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t also proud of sucking at math in my high school days for the exact same reason.

Validation via gender stereotypes. Interesting because, gender stereotypes are a problem, but also, you know, you fit the right ones, which is exciting.

Until you're a guy who's bad at math and you want to cry. Am I the only one?

I'm great at math, well I suck now in upper division ones.  Studied mental math but I'm slow at it now.  It's nice to know that the reason I was good at math was that I was really a guy.

I got bad grades in math, but only because all the math classes had a really weird system where you'd save all your homework for a week or two and turn it all in at once.  Crazy irritating

The truth of the statistic is based on how sexist the country is. In really sexist countries, girls will suck at math, but in more equal countries, they perform as well as boys.

No worries, I'm a straight guy and not that good at math.
So we balance it out. ^^

You know the funny thing?  I don't suck at math.  Oh, I suck at basic arithmetic, but at the higher functions I'm really quite clever.  And.........  So was almost everyone else in my advanced math classes and....  they were well over three quarters female.  Especially when you included myself.

Even more fascinating I wasn't really even trying that hard.  I wasn't truly capable of trying very hard at anything.  And at least in my case I think my failure at basic arithmetic is just a simple case of boredom.  I COULD do it, but it's too mind-numbing and tedious and my mind would rather let the drones (or a computer) do that simple stuff for me to free me up to do more complex thinking.

So yeah.  At least at MY highschool that stereotype couldn't be Gender Inverted any further.

I think part of that stereotype is that people seem to think women aren't capable of logical thought, that they're pure "intuition"...  What they don't realize is that that intuition is actually just logic followed instinctively.  And when someone bothers to train themselves to harness that ability...  They become capable of some really amazing things.

I know the feeling~ The little, unimportant coincidences bring unexplainable, pure joy~

Meanwhile, the conincidences of manliness can manage to bring dread. >.> I wound up getting particularly annoyed at my hands when someone pointed out that I had man hands. And I've taken to angleing my legs in such a manner that they don't spread....

But I wind up explaining away the manly traits, and rejoicing in the feminine ones.

men have the left side of the brain more developed, therefore are better at math and physics
women have a better synapses between both sides of the brain, so they're better at multitasking and other stuff

but obviously these are just in general, theres not absolute truth

Haha, I can relate (on the opposite side though..). I'm 'proud' of sucking at 'girly' subjects like drama and literature (and also having an aptitude for math, science, 'logic' and spatial reasoning-type things), and also when my mum criticises me for having traits like 'expressing no emotion in my voice' and 'not being very empathic'.

If Rain were good at math, she'd come to realize that Rudy + Rain = RuIn...

Seriously, though, how are these two so good at being cute? The kiss in panel 6 has honestly got to be the most adorable scene in the comic so far... it's hard just to look at without being overwhelmed! And Rain's victory squee in the final panel is cute and hilarious, albeit somewhat pathetic. Anyhow, here we have Rain and Rudy, young and in love. Or... whatever you call the bond between them right now. There's something to be said about two people going into something unfamiliar together; perhaps the fact that a romantic relationship is something new to both of them makes it an even more meaningful experience for the two of them. I mean, you only get one first time at everything. While I'm not necessarily optimistic about their relationship surviving, they do make an impossibly cute couple. I am interested in seeing where their relationship goes, and just where they are after "one week".

Well, for Rain, every little bit helps.

And I think it's just Rudy being Rudy.

...and that actually sounds like something I'd say, albeit in a more clearly sarcastic manner.

Oddly enough in my highschool it was the opposite. The girls were usually the best ones at math. Though my advance calculus class was split like 50/50 between girls and boys.

Another brilliant comment from Rudy! Ordinarily, I'd be giggling like mad and relishing the adorableness, but I'm still really mad at Rudy for betraying Maria and Gavin.

I have to admit that this is the sweetest and cutest page of the comic. Its nice to see someone treating Rain so nice and even see her smile like that. Also she changed her hair and it looks really good. As for sucking at math that not necessarily true there are many women that are good at math and men that suck at it. But it is funny that Rain uses it to validate who she is.

I'm a mathematical geek MtF who believes in magic. PARADOX MACHINE, TURN ON!

From my perspective, it looks like girls who give it their all at school are statistically better than guys who give it their all, in most theoretical fields. On the other hand, it definitely looks like they are less numerous.
Doesn't matter much - these are tendencies at most

Rain is adorable in the last panel. And Rudy's adorable all the way.

I can pretty much guarantee that nearly anyone will do worse on any test if they're reminded that it's they might not do well on it just before.

Princess-Kay In reply to JocelynSamara [2012-03-25 07:25:27 +0000 UTC]

Pretty much.

But I was mostly referring to the power of the stereotypes on individuals. People get nervous - or angry at the stereotype, or... well, regardless, it gets in the way.
