Description

******FULL-VIEW HIGHLY ENCOURAGED******

This was meant to be the map for one of the novels in the world I want to create but alas my plans have changed a bit. I'm currently going through a major revamp because I was not fully pleased with the way things were going.. So this is now just a fantasy map sketch. I'm currently experiencing new mapping styles and getting inspiration here and there. Hopefully I will come up with the perfect map for what I want to write.

I'm letting all the deviants that already favored this piece to know what I'm doing and in case you unfavor the deviation, I understand

So in the end, the map is still the same, losing the names attached to it and its meaning.

I have to send a special thanks to the artists that provided me some of the tools I used here:

for the awesome mountain brushes found here and here

for the cracks brush I used on the ice up north, found here

for the Knotwork Border

As for the clouds, I'm very sorry but I'm just not capable of recognizing them and give credit to the right artist because I've downloaded a whole bunch of them! I'm truly sorry but whoever you are, I thank you

Made with Photoshop CS3

Thanks for watching, I hope you liked it

Do you happen to have a higher res image and without water mark? I am currently using this map to run my D&D campaign and would love to get a large poster sized print made of it. Be happy to pay you for your work.

No, been a while since I wrote anything, job's been killing me lately. But I got to a point in the story that the map wasn't going to be true to itself. So will have to redo it someday Thanks for asking!

Mm this is a tasty map, I love the light brushes and the fiddly coastline bits look great. Logo looks great, clouds + knotwork are a little busy but they don't get in the way so no complaint.

The only problem I'm seeing with this is that all of the text at city level is almost illegible. It's a nice fantasy font and clearer than some I've seen, but it just doesn't read at that size. My suggestion would be, either just blowing up the city text larger, or to find a nice sans serif font that will be more readable at that size, but matches well enough that it isn't out of place. www.dafont.com is a personal favourite for finding usable fonts.

Thank you for your extensive criticism I greatly appreciate it! I know that site, that's where I get some of the fonts I use

You have in fact touched the sensitive issue about this map indeed. I had the exact same thoughts you did and I struggled with them. In the end, I kept the font anyway. I've tried several other fonts but I just didn't like the result. The problem is the map you're seeing is a simplified version. I can't make the font any bigger because there's much more names in it than you see in this version.

I discovered it's not an easy map to add text to it. It could be easier if the map was bigger. But I agree with you, this aspect should and will probably be revised eventually. For now it suits my needs because it's just a reference map for my novel

Thanks again!

ah I see what you're saying. Maybe a compromise, like having the single map here with slightly larger city text, and then some zoomed-in area shots of the different areas with all of the additional text, would be most understandable for people? np!

Yeah you're right. I have actually zoomed in one of the regions and added additional info to it. But I'm keeping that for myself right now since I'm still working on the novel.

This map looks amazing, it seems like it can be the basis for a very interesting story. The clouds and the pattern in the corners are nice details.

Awesome. On a side note, the names for the places are really good. They don't just seem to be generic-sound-cool fantasy names. They seem to have a theme or culture behind them. What was the inspiration for them?

I'm glad you noticed that I have worked on my name database way before I even got the stories in my head to write. I have a passion for names and to come up with new and different names for pretty much anything. So I got inspiration in lots of cultures and languages and started making my own database. I search all over the internet to see if any of the names I come up with ever existed. If so, I'd immediately erase it. My whole list contains over 1000 names now and they're all original.

It's all about brainstorming and mixing letters and words. Sometimes a simple word that you and I recognize can be altered by changing one single letter and it becomes a cool name The ideas are limitless!

Thanks

You're welcome! 1000 names is expansive. Your dedication is admirable. So this a map for a story? I write too. In the future, if you're ever interested in a beta reading exchange. I'd swap sections of manuscripts.

Thanks It really helps when you're enthusiastic about something Yes this is part of the world I created in my head for my novels. This is just the northernmost continent of that world and where my first novel takes place.

Ah a fellow writer Good to know, yes I'd be pleased to do that if you want to. Although I write in my native language, Portuguese. I may translate it to English further up the road though. I'm no professional translator so it may lose some of its "touch".

Thanks again

SapphireCityMedia In reply to jmelisio [2014-03-31 14:58:46 +0000 UTC]

Ah! I know what you're saying! Some things are always lost in translation. Sometimes when I go to people's pages on dA, my google chrome browser offers to translate the entire page into english if it is not. If you have anything  posted right now, maybe I could go to the deviation, or preferably journal, switch that feature on, and send it back to you in English with some quick "copy cut paste" action.

And you're welcome.

Cool I see them OwO
Though, just barely

Although, I should tell you, I've illustrated a good few handfuls of my symbols with Adobe Illustrator. Maybe you'd like me to submit them so they'd be of better quality?

jmelisio In reply to Feare909 [2014-03-28 10:28:15 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I know what you mean

I had a hard time fitting the words on it, they're actually too small for my taste. The complete map with all the locations and names is even harder to distinguish. But your symbols were used in the capitals only and those are here. Can't actually make them bigger though.

Thanks!
