Looks good, the roots are a bit funky but when compared with A Link to the Past, definitely work. I actually found this through a generic google search and got all excited thinking someone had made an updated version of the game. Still, this looks awesome!

Not sure the A Link to the Past style works for this (actually not for me), a bit too cutsy, but still interesting to see how it'd look if it had been.

Well, I just kind of tried to think of what Nintendo might actually have done, based on what their other snes games looked. Other than Super Metroid and maybe F-Zero, very few Nintendo games of that era had very realistic or detailed sprite work. I also tried to use the Super Mario All-Stars updates for Mario 2 and 3 as inspiration.
I know I have some more Ocarina of Time styled sprites for this, done up a bit like the snes Castlevania games. Maybe someday I'll do an alternate take on this using those sprites.
Thanks for the comment!

This is pretty damned good. did a good job in keeping the aesthetic of link to the past's style. Reminds me of those classic gaming days.

Yeah, I really had to try not to overdo it! LttP had a very subdued look to it, real simple art and even the HUD is pretty low-key. Those were good times.

I love Link's Awakening on Gameboy and Link to the Past on SNES but I loathe Ocarina of Time so much I smashed the cartridge with a hammer. Horrible tedious game with awful blurry graphics (but then most N64 games suffered from that).

jmatchead In reply to Carnivius [2011-01-01 23:52:04 +0000 UTC]
Uh, don't really see how Ocarina was much different from Link to the Past, other than the 3D graphics. If you didn't like the graphics, though, Wind Waker and Twilight Princess are some of the nicest looking games in the series.
The modern DS games, Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks, are also pretty good. They feel alot like the old school games, with the overhead perspective and all.

I don't like the gameplay or feel of the 3D games at all and Ocarina featured some of the most tedious level design of any game I've ever played (especially the Water temple which I found incredibly boring and monotonous). The whole concept of the ocarina too just annoyed me having to play crappy little tunes. Oh and Navi, goddamn Navi was an irritating little shit (I can still hear the words 'hey' and 'listen' when I try to sleep). The controls bugged me too but that might just be down to the fact the N64 has the most uncomfortable poorly designed joypad ever made (I got severe blisters on my fingers using those damn things). Can't believe I paid over Β£500 for that piece of crap game console (Starfox 64 was pretty much the only game I felt was really good on it). It did a lot to destroy any love I had for Nintendo as I loved the NES/SNES/GB era though finally sold off all three of those last year as I don't use old systems anymore, far preferring emulation. I still happily play Link's Awakening and Link to the Past from start to finish no matter how many times I've completed them before. Twilight Princess looks decent enough but I don't like Wind Waker's style at all. Perhaps I'm just too old for that cartoon network type of simply drawn character design.
Those DS games are let down by ugly poor lowpoly 3D (worse than PS1, I didn't like 3D graphics until sometime late in the PS2 era) and awful controls. Rather just get my old GBA (well PSP actually since my GBA got stolen and my PSP can store tons of roms on it for many systems to play on the go) and play the GB/GBC games though I hate they added Ocarina Link's sounds to the GBA port of Link to the Past. Annoying as hell. Same goes for the NES/SNES Mario games ported to GBA, I hate that damn Mario voice. Some characters are just more likable when they didn't talk. I didn't care much for the Minish Cap either come to think of it but at least it was 2D and controlled well even if I didn't care for the story or graphic style.

I don't think that the art in Wind Waker has anything to do with your age, cause I think a mature person can appreciate great art however it may be packaged. Sorry you feel so strongly, but I have to disagree and say that the 3D Zelda games have added a ton of great things to the franchise, as well as having some really thoughtful game design, far better than most modern games.
Still, some people just like old school stuff to stay old school.

Carnivius In reply to jmatchead [2011-01-03 09:46:07 +0000 UTC]
So I'm not mature cos I find Wind Waker's graphics massively unappealing? I see. Sorry but I just can't stand playing them. They're not the same games I grew up with and they lost a lot of the charm and appeal I associate with the older games and I find the 3D is a huge hindrance in a lot of them as they seem to try to be clever yet make the games really annoying to play. Same goes for most other Nintendo stuff like Mario and Metroid, I'm quite happy to play the old 2D stuff but the 3D stuff I just find awful (like turning Metroid into another boring first person shooter with dull generic graphics). I reckon Yoshi's Island on SNES was the last Nintendo game I truly enjoyed. Full of creativity and uniqueness yet somehow most people prefer to remember the ultra bland by-the-numbers Donkey Kong Country instead which came out about the same time (which had three games almost all identical). Makes no sense.

Sorry man, but times change. I grew up with those 2d games too, but nothing lasts forever. Games change, technology changes, standards change. There's plenty of people that can't stand the old stuff just as much as you can't stand the new stuff. Not everybody wants to play the same stuff they grew up with, and not everbody has the same nostalgia.
But both old and new have their strong points, both are full of creativity and both carry on the same spirit of fun, exploration and challenge. I try to enjoy the best of both worlds, rather than missing out on the fun in either.

Carnivius In reply to jmatchead [2011-01-03 21:10:47 +0000 UTC]
Don't give me that 'times change' shit. Uncharted, which excels in every single damn area, on PS3 has become my absolute fave game series of all time and that only began a few years ago and I've pre-ordered LittleBigPlanet2 after enjoying the first one muchly especially due to the near enough unlimited creativity from both the developers and the players (basically it's the game nintendo should have made but I'm glad they didn't as it would just be full of the same tired old Mario collecting stars crud environment they've done to death) plus I've spent more time on my PS3 in the two years I've had it than any of the previous consoles I've owned (which is most of them). I just think I outgrew Nintendo's kiddy crap years ago but still enjoy the 8 and 16 bit stuff they did back when I thought they could do no wrong. These days they seem to devote a lot of time focusing on never-ending pokemon games and not-really-games-at-all for people like my mom with all this wii fit and brain training shite. If anything it's the wii that's stuck in the past with it's outdated technology that's made a lot of game companies frustrated with it's limitations (and some wii owners too as a friend of mine is a huge batman fan yet cannot play Batman: Arkham Asylum as it didn't come out on wii) and most gamers I know with one only really use it for the virtual console stuff to play ancient games anyways.
Anyways whatever. I only posted originally out of gratitude for this picture bringing back some happy memories of simpler times but I'm fed up with this debate.

I don't really want to have this conversation anymore, but I will say that Uncharted is the most insipid, unoriginal and derivative piece of crap that any developer has ever shoved down America's throats. Every mechanic is stolen, its plot is just Indiana Jones tripe, and its characters simply are not characters. Every aspect of the game is creatively bankrupt. Don't pretend like you miss Nintendo's creativity and then champion an unoriginal turd like that.
If that's what you value in games, then yes, Nintendo will disappoint you, but don't pretend like you've matured and reached some epiphany, because you haven't. You're just like every other "hardcore" twenty something bro that eats up HD mass market garbage.

I'm not 20 something. I'm 31. And Uncharted may not be wholly original but it's the most finely polished, highly playable game ever made. Simply put I play it more than I've played any other game (racked up over 300 hours in multiplayer since I got it and I usually don't like online deathmatch stuff, certainly hate fps games). Everything about it feels near perfect to me from the superb controls (which now feel like second nature to me), the feeling of the characters in the environment (they don't just seem 'pasted' there like most games) and it's the only series in years where I actually give a crap what happens in the story and don't feel a need to constantly skip cutscnes (it helps that some of the story unfolds during the actual playing bits anyways but the cutscenes themselves are never too long unlike the tediousness of Metal Gear Solid 4 for example). Everything about it is a skillfully put together piece of art and certainly rate it higher than anything else I've played in the last 26 or so years since I got my first computer. Even knocked Symphony of the Night (best thing the japanese ever made) off the top of my list for sheer replayability (finished the story mode at least 20 times now whereas most games I tire of about halfway through).
best freakin' game series ever. End of. Roll on Uncharted 3.

Tell me about it. Even if you can, finding someone that will actually even remotely cooperate is nearly impossible!
I'd love a remake for the Wii, using DS connectivity! That would definitely save the trouble of having to gather up all the GBA connector cables, anyway.
