That's actually Captain Nemo from Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water.
But no need to apologize since it's probably obvious that Nemo is suppose to be a mix of Captain Okita from Space Battleship Yamato clothing-wise and Captain Global/Global from Super Dimension Fortress Macross appearance-wise (am I losing you yet?). Hideaki Anno worked on Macross in 1982 as an animator. One of his examples can be seen in the episode Pineapple Salad when Milia and Max(?) are inside Macross City in their mechas. I can link you to that example, if you like.

As for the icon, it's not the quality of the icon that matters, it's the quality of the person using the icon. Just thought I'd get a little phylisophical at the end. XP

I think it's actually becoming popular at a slow rate, which could partially be blamed on me. Everytime I go onto a Summer Wars/.Hack// video, I go jabbering about how "Sadamoto also did this, this, this, and OMFGGEEWIZZ ITS EVAJELLYUN!!!!1010110214e25r3".
But even so, it hasn't reached the same popularity as other anime series have, like Elfin Lied or etc.
